Upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10?

My desktop is a older Lenovo with a i3 processor, 8 GB ram, 1 TB hard drive and Windows 7 Home Premium OS. Right after I got the desktop up and running the "complimentary" forced upgrade to Windows 10 was something I did not want so I installed a blocker program...

I know Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7 next January. I manually search for Windows 7 updates and PC is current in regards to Microsoft updates...

Would this PC be worth upgrading? My research on this topic has raised more questions than answers. I found this on Amazon and looks to be the best way to go for an upgrade https://www.amazon.com/OEM-Windows-H...s%2C223&sr=8-4

I am at best a "novice" in regards to working knowledge with PC's. I know a guy that builds Windows based PC's who would assist with the upgrade...

    Some suggestions would be helpful...

Don't do it. That's the best advice you could get, and there's no charge for it.

ONLY if you actually LIKE Win10. If you're worried about security (A non-issue, as far as I'm concerned), try Win 8.1 Pro, and use "classic Shell" to make it work, and look like Win7.

I did the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and it works pretty well for me, no issues with hanging or crashing etc.

If you're looking at a complete reinstall, which is a very good way to go, you can also consider getting a new SSD as your hard drive and use it to install Windows 10. If your current PC is using spinning drives, this will also give it a massive boost in performance. SSD are cheap now, you can get a Samsung 1TB SSE for $152.99 at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Inch-...gateway&sr=8-3

If your current PC still works, I'll say it is worth the upgrade.

You could do what I did.

            I have both 7 & 10. on one screen/mouse & 1 printer + speakers..

Use ExrtermX switch box works great..I keep win 7 off the net though.

Legally you cannot use an OEM license to upgrade. An OEM license is only for manufacturers of new systems. Your current endpoint may not pass the CPU precheck. Some older CPUs are not eligible for upgrade to 10. Windows 8.1 is also near end of life, 2023.

I don't really care for Windows 10 as it's the OS on my laptop. I run Norton 360 AV on the desktop...

On the security issue (or non-issue), I don't do any online financial transactions other than an occasional ebay or Amazon purchase. I could stick with Windows 7 along with an installed AV program and just carry on and forget about the Microsoft support & updates for Windows 7 after January 2020???

Wrong. Microsoft allows valid Windows 7,8, and 8.1 to be upgraded to 10. OEM licenses included. The automated upgrade period may have passed but you still can upgrade, legally.

If all you do is browse the internet then please upgrade. Windows 7 is HORRIBLY insecure. Ditch the Norton crap too. The integrated Microsoft security suite is great. Also, don't click on links in email and keep adobe and office updated and you'll be fine.

You should lose Norton, and go for AVAST AV. It's higher rated, less obnoxious, lighter, and friendlier for other software. Performance wise, you can't beat it.

                      Just sayin'.

My Norton subscription will expire in 36 days. The Amazon link for the upgrade disk in my OP cost $100 and doing a little more research I found this download link from Microsoft https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10 looks like I can do the upgrade for free...

I hear you about Norton, the crap is expensive as well as a resource hog. I would not be opposed to switching to something like AVAST AV (free or paid ) and stick with Windows 7. Going with AVAST AV for 1 year would take me past the Windows 7 support termination in January 2020. My fear is going for the download/install upgrade and run into a glich, but then if the Windows 10 download/install works I could roll with Windows Defender AV and get continuous updates/support ...

The last time I renewed Norton I made sure to disable the automatic CC renewal. I do have time to figure this out...

You can always opt for Win8.1Pro/Classic Shell. I use it on all my better computers. I can tell you how to set it up, so as to be sleek, fast, and trouble free.

Now that we in non-Beta Windows 10 (equiv of SP2) with build 1809 from the Microsoft web site... why don't you try using your legit 7 key w/the same flavor of Windows 10 via a clean install?

It looks like, from my testing, Win7 home keys will work for Windows 10 home, and Win7Pro keys work w/Win10Pro, but they have to be clean installed(, not upgrade from inside Windows), so you have to boot from the DVD Disc, or Windows 10 USB media via M$ utility.

I personally wouldn't run Win10 on a spinning rust-platter drive, only from an SSD of any flavor, even older SSD tech, and dual-core or better, w/8GB(+) of RAM.

I did a successful upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 10 Home Premium using the link I pasted in post #12. All my files imported and everything looks good. The Norton AV installed on this desktop will expire in about 35 days. A couple of days prior to expiration I will go ahead and activate Windows Defender...

The upgrade took about 1 1/2 hours. All good. I am stoked that I was able to do this and it did not cost me a dime...

Thanks to everyone who posted here. I appreciate all the suggestions that was offered up...
