Since some mentioned here that kindle is only good if you buy a lot of books on amazon, I just want to mention an awesome free option on how to get books for your kindle or any reader.

It’s your local library! Getting a library card is free and they have thousands of ebooks. My library partners with overdrive which allows you to borrow books through amazon and get them on your kindle. They also partner with Libby, Axis360 and Hoopla. So you can get a ton of ebooks and audiobooks for free. For hot new releases you may need to put a title on hold and wait a couple weeks until it becomes available, since they only have certain quantities of ebooks per title available. But Everything is free!

      So check with your library.

Side note, I listen to a lot of audiobooks in the car. I used to subscribe to audible, which is not cheap, but now I just get all my audiobooks from my library. I highly recommend it!

THIS! I stopped using my ipad mini to read in bed and switched back to reading from my iPhone.... still hurts when I drop the phone... but not as much as dropping the mini!

I save the mini for reading elsewhere!

My girlfiend gave me a Kindle paperwhite for Christmas, to replace the 5 year old Kindle Fire I'd been using. I download books nearly exclusively for free from the public library.

I like the paperwhite in nearly all ways better than the older one, lighter, easier to hold, battery lasts multiples of time longer, etc. I can read in bed without risk of injury. The battery lasts well though a multi day camping trip.

However, the ability to connect to the internet and do the download or return process is weak and time consuming, as the on-board chips and browser are about 286 chip performance.

So I 'shop' on my desktop, and when they are checked out, I download them (and return them) via the old kindle. Once they are downloaded, they appear on any of my kindle devices.
