Quick Question on Heatsink Compound.

My wife's old PC Chipset fan died again, this is the 4 or 5 time to replace it.

Hopefully the chipset has not fried; have no idea when it went kaput. (runs 7/24)

Question:

Can automotive heat sink compound be used instead of dedicated computer stuff. I would think so, both have the same purpose.

I wouldn't. Computer chips get hotter, faster than car parts.

Sounds like you need to upgrade to a higher quality fan.

I use Arctic Silver 5, and only have to re-gel every 5 years at the earliest, and I run lots of high heat graphics on laptops. I think there's a new one out that some say is better, but the Arctic Silver 5 does the job just fine for me. However, if you apply too little, or too much, it can be a problem.

I have a 9 yr old ThinkPad I re-gelled with an earlier version of Arctic Silver the day I got it (8 yrs ago) and it still runs cool.

I re-gel maybe 10-20 computers a month, sometimes much more, and the Arctic Silver 5 seems to be the ticket for me.

Any computer I work on over 3 yrs old, gets re-gelled with Arctic Silver 5.

Thanks Dragunov, the chipset fan in the Asus A8n-SLI Deluxe is a known problem. For a good board at the time, why Asus choose such a dinky weak fan that freezes is beyond comprehension. (2006)

This particular PC is delegated as a word processor at the moment until we can afford a laptop and all that goes with it that you suggested in another thread. Just not doable at this time.

Do not over-apply, it is electrically conductive as well. Smooth, THIN layer and don't allow it to squeeze out or get it onto any contacts.

While I agree it is best to keep a thin layer and make it neat etc, it is not conductive.

ETA: Saw a comment from another poster about the compound being capacitive which I hadn't heard before, but it is indeed per the Arctic Silver website.

Thanks to all for your comments. Ordered a fan yesterday and it arrived about two hours ago. Unfortunately I figure I could buy the Artic Silver locally, not the case, so ordered it from Amazon.

(I realized just how bad my cataracts are disassembling/assembling the fan and heat sink. Dang tiny screws).

Anyway thank you all. Just hoping the chip set didn't fry from a dead fan for an unknown length of time.

The thinner the arctic silver layer is, the more efficient the heat xfer will be. Make sure the entire mating surfaces are covered.

Not sure, but Arctic Silver is only a few bucks, so I would just avoid the chance.

Maybe use your Google Fu and see if any reputable sites have done a comparison of makeup and performance before you go that route. I doubt the comparison has been done though.

Wait a minute. You've bought the same ****ty stock fan, had it "FAIL" 4 or 5 times and you still can't figure it out?
