This looks promising. Ubuntu was going to have a phone OS for a while, then it died on the vine.

Sailfish has been talked about for years...
Firefox OS phones are not a thing anymore...
WebOS "WAS?" an option, even used on my TV.

All still Linux based, I believe.

The problem is, as I see it: what applications and developers will be developing for a 3rd-party phone OS, when the market is run by Android devices, followed by iPhruity devices?

There is always ChinaDroid devices, lean and mean, I understand:

At least on Android, as it syncs w/a gmail account that doesn't require a real name... (iCloud, iTunes, etc require a credit card-tied to account? Same with AppleCare?)

Another problem with 3rd party (3rd OS?) phones is that you might not get LTE-speeds out of them, just 2g-3g(-4g)?
This is due to proprietary protocols used, I believe.

I don't own one, but I remember Sean Hannity raving about the "Black Phone"

And yes, I do realize it is an Android based system. It is probably not realistic for the OP to put a long list of demands about what he does not want and still expect that there is any viable solution beyond that worth buying.

yea it died due to issues with the window manager, there's a whole thing about unity and gnome and kde blah blah blah . . .

I just wish linux would pick a WM and go with it, having all the different options causes a lot of headaches for programmers and is one of the main reasons the OS has issues getting accepted.

Windows phone is officially dead as of last year and Firefox Phone the year before.

Amazon's Fire Phone is still around I believe, but it's more of a variation on Android. Also, I doubt Amazon is going to be any better of a company for you.

If you are tech savvy enough, you can find a few viable open source options, but expect apps and updates to be practically non-existent.

                      Understandable,

Have you looked at a few of the tough phones by kyocera? The Dura Vx looked nice. As soon as I quit my career in IT I will be going for one of those.

The jitterbug flip is not an android phone, you may be confused with the jitterbug smart. The flip runs a proprietary OS from Greatcall.

And while you may not be physically old enough for AARP, something tells me they might admit you on an honorary basis. Now go outside and tell some kid to get off your lawn on your way to the Amish Luddite phone store

Another vote for Windows Phone. I had 2 of them over the past 5 years and I thought that the operating system was rock solid. I know MS abandoned their phones, but my old one still works great, especially for what you are looking for. You can find new ones on eBay for under a $100 (old stock).

Yes, nothing like a fractured ecosystem and app store polluted with malware says 'years ahead'.
