Watching solar eclipse *through* an iPhone?

Will that damage my eyes? my iPhone?

I have an iPhone 6. I figure I could turn on the camera and using the phone to block out the sun while it displays the sun and eclipse on its screen.

An alternative is to switch it from the camera on the rear to the camera on the face of the phone (used for selfies), have my back to the sun and while looking down at the phone aim it so that it is videoing the eclipse over my shoulder (if you get what I mean).

    Thoughts?

You'll fry your phone camera is my first thought.

          Thanks, but why?

I don't get it. People leave their phones off with the front facing or rear facing camera facing up into the sky all the time, on their dashboards, seats beach towels or somewhere else. Why should the fact that it is on versus off cause the sensor damage?

This says you should use a filter for the phone.

There are going to be millions watching the eclipse — and many will try to capture it through the lens on their smartphone. Here’s advice from the pros about how to take the best pics.

Cameras have shutters that are closed when the camera function is off. Even when they are on, a lens pointed at the sky isn't the same thing as a lens pointed at the sun. Your eyes look up at the sky all the time without harm too.

Why do I have a feeling there are going to be lots of broken smart phones right after the eclipse.

And how can I use that information to make up a stock tip.

... That I can then sell to the dummies who have the broken phones.

I wonder how many people are going to burn the camera out on their cell phones today

View the eclipse the lo-tech 1960's way: Make a cardboard box pinhole camera. Literally take a cardboard box bigger than your head. Poke a hole with a needle in the back of the box off to one side. Position your body so the sun is at your back, behind you, then stick your head in the box. Reposition a bit as necessary until you see the sun projected onto the interior of the box in front of your face.

No chance of frying your phone or your eyes, unless you face the sun and look at it through the pinhole directly.

Too funny. You need a card with a hole in it. Not that complicated.
