If you want software deals, If you are NOT a student, go to the local city college, sign up for one class. Get a Student ID and buy all of your software at 80%+ discounts with a Student Discount. I paid $899 for the Adobe Master Collection CS6 when it retailed at $2,899.

In perfect world I would edit using Avid.
Im a student, but whose giving 80% student discounts?

i'll take a look into Imovie thanks! i used Magix and it was pretty cool but i want to try out others before sticking to one.

Adobe offers 60% off of the Creative Cloud for Students. I got my version as the last of the CD/DVD based programs.

Yet another editor chiming in. As my brethren above mentioned, Avid is a great program, but for your use, too heavy on strict workflow.

Most all the editing programs work off of the same J/K/L playback, V/B insert/overwrite, Z/X lift/cut paradigm. Unless you can't do something you know you want to do in an editing suite, you do fine in most anything.

Organization, and versioning will take you a long way towards not committing suicide because you can't find 'that thing', or can't remember what your cut looked like before you started down a rabbit hole an hour ago, and it's all gone to crud (ask us how we know).

You have to convert the GoPro files, because you can't edit with MP4/h264 files.

Free: Mac=iMovie Win=Movie Maker. It really is about that simple.

NOW... If you feel like spending some money, but not go crazy I recommend Adobe Premier Elements. You can get it from Amazon for $89 http://amzn.to/2q7GKTm

I have used the full pro version before and I find that this is a good balance between basics and all the bells and whistles. Plus it has two modes. The easy mode where it does a lot of the work for you and simplifies your choices and an expert mode that gives you a lot more control. The best part about that for new users is that you can start in basic mode and then move over to expert as your skill progresses.

See if you can find anyone selling Final Cut Pro 7, I've seen a few good deals on it. Apple doesn't support 7 anymore, but it's a great workhorse editing software unlike that pro-sumer Final Cut Pro X crap.

Well, since you said free and I am cheap, I use VSDC Free Video Editor. They also have a free video multiformat converter. Doesn't cost anything to give them a try, except download and install time.
