Network Admin - Recommendations on Books/Online Courses

    CBT nuggets
    Has lots of good stuff
Start with CompTIA A+, then network +, then security+, then depending on your environment start a windows track or Cisco or even VM
.Gov I think can get unlimited access for 1k per person, you can do the training and practice tests all you want, they also have virtual labs to help, then you would have to pay for any actual certifications you want to do which are like 300 bucks and up
Or if course just get the knowledge and forego testing

Right now I'm kind of stuck with "ok... bummer".

      Nuuze/Igorts - thanks!
i don't know that the books are necessary and to his point, if you don't have it in you, you really won't read the books anyway (or at least i wouldn't).

My recommendation would be to understand the basic terminology so you're at least speaking the same language then have them explain why they can't do it and ask lot's of questions when you don't understand. If they can't explain it on terms you understand then that's usually a red flag. Don't forget to do this with personality as they could take this positively or negatively depending on their perception of you.

a career change is going to be tough and require tons of work but as a vet, i am sure you have the tools to succeed.

start with the comptia stuff and figure out what environment you enjoy. from there you can figure out what layer of the OSI model you want to work with and go from there.

i started out in IT at 17 while in HS. i am 36 now and still enjoy it but moved around quite a bit to find out i enjoyed infosec the most.

network admin jobs are easily had if you have experience as a network admin or network technician. if you truly want to go down this route, look for entry level IT/IS tech jobs.

          Here you go OP:

You can prepare for your Cisco CCNA 200-301 exam by following this CCNA online training - all topics are covered.

It should keep you busy for a while. It is pretty much the entire textbook for the first block of the CCNA course. It covers the theoretical stuff, but eventually you're going to have to buy or get access to a switch or two so you can actually practice and do some hands-on exercises.

Also, learn how to subnet. Learn it and learn it well. Subnetting is love. Subnetting is life.

I took the Cisco sponsored certification course at San Diego Continuing Education. Passed the CCNA (3 tries).
Then we replaced all our Cisco network gear with Juniper.
Now I work on Juniper and rarely touch Cisco.
Everything I do on the network devices involves command line.

San Diego Continuing Education has network courses available from time to time.

I also recommend you take Linux admin classes.

I spoke with a guy traveling for work a month or two ago. Both of us were flying back home from traveling for work. He said Cisco all the way. No user issues. No BS, just a nice cushy Ethernet pipe to watch "training" youtube videos on...

I am sick of user issues... especially Obama fans, where everything is all about them...

Best part is it's free. The instructor is a dual CCIE, really knows his stuff. You won't find a more knowledgeable instructor. His course probably helped me the most to pass my CCNA exam. I can also recommend courses by Chris Bryant and Lazaro Diaz. I bought CCNP, CCNA security, and CCNA wireless from the website too. They're usually $15-$20 per course, so it's a great deal.

The CCNA course can be pretty intensive if you're new to networking. It's also obviously geared towards Cisco equipment. If your company doesn't have Cisco enterprise level hardware, or you just want general network technology training, you might be better off taking a CompTIA Net+ course. The CCNA is aimed at people wanting to start or advance their career as a network engineer.
Great resource, thanks for the tip!

If you are interested in Cisco networking, I would setup the simulator

Also, I would make sure you are familiar with VMs and run something like the simulator in one since it could interfere with other system functions.

NetApp also has a simulator if you are interested in learn about storage.

check out professor messor for some free videos mainly on certification courses but the info should help.

there's also cybrary.it that is a large online resource for it learning.

I was strongly considering the Cisco Academy, which is several classes put on at jr colleges and other colleges that will give you a cert or two if you pass the test at the end of the class. One-two classes could do a LOT for some people. I am just looking for something to cover the gaps that I do not know, and like you, I do not know what I do not know.
