I have been thinking of getting a fire TV to hook an external HD to and use as a media streaming box. I had never been interested in Kodi, or even checked it out since until last week I had AT&T dsl that was slow to say the least. I switched to comcast internet and am getting some amazing speed now.

After reading this thread I installed Kodi with Titanium on my laptop last night. I still can't believe how cool it is. I will be getting a couple of fire TV's for sure now. The Calguns community has a never ending way of siphoning from my wallet. And I must say Thank You Calguns members.

is there somewhere I could get more info on this? I have a couple pi's just sitting around and have often wondered what I should do with them, this seems like a perfect solution.

are you saying the Raspberry Pi 3 running Kodi lets you have any addons you want and that the firestick running Kodi doesn't let you run any addons you want?

The thing about the firestick is that it is limited to 8gb of internal storage. You cannot add more external storage. If you keep adding apps to your firestick, it will run out of space. I forget which apps are preinstalled, but usually people will want Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, etc.

Here are some examples you can run out of space on your firestick.

There are alot of things you can do on Kodi, for example if you have a NAS attached, you can stream your local movies. One thing that Kodi does is that it automatically indexes all your movies. It pulls up movie posters, trailers, info, subtitles, etc. It saves all that stuff somewhere and by default it will save it to the device itself. (except for the trailer, the trailer streams from youtube.) A few mb for posters, a few kb for movie info, it all adds up if you have a big library.

Also another thing is it can act as a PVR. (like a Tivo.) If you watch TV on it, you can record it, but you won't have much space to save stuff on the firestick. However, you can change the saved files to a different location like a NAS.

The Ras Pi is still limited to 1gb of ram too. It will run Kodi but you will still run into occassional lag. Cost wise, the Raspberry Pi 3 is about $35. Add a case and power supply for another $10-$15. Add a fast microsd $15. At the price point, I would recommend a refurb Amazon Fire TV ($65).

If you are serious about watching Kodi/streaming stuff, like 4k content, I can point you to some better but more expensive options or making a dedicated HTPC.

Personally, I have been using the new generation firestick in my bedroom tv. It is a very capable unit for the price. I cannot recommend it enough.

Firestick is on sale. $29.99 on Amazon. No KODI. You have to add that yourself. Plenty of videos how to do that on Youtube.

Get a Fire tv NOT THE STICK!!! Tv has better speeds and more storage. The stick will drive you nuts with all the buffering.

After you load, Kodi do this https://seo-michael.co.uk/tutorial-h...s-wizard-kodi/
ares is a list of builds that set's up Kodi for you basically point and click easy peasy.

I have been using the pulse ccm build for about 3 years now it alerts you when you need to update.

Pheonix is ok. Exodus and Velocity are excellent.. Sportsdevil for sports works as well.

Spinztv add on works great for me.. No buffering issues unless I'm trying to watch live ufc ppv. Other then that no buffering issues.
