You mentioned your wife is a PC user, so perhaps this won't fly but I got my wife a chromebook for $250 on her birthday last year. Had an Acer before that but it had the same issue of not working if it wasnt plugged in.
She also mainly just uses her laptop for browsing, youtube, emails, shopping etc.
It's been going strong so far and is super fast as well having a 32GB SSD and all (not a proper SSD though), you also get 100GB of Google Drive storage free for a year and then afterwards i think it's $5 a month or something but you get 15GB for free anyhow. Hers also has a 1080 resolution screen which makes a huge difference too in my opinion.
Perhaps give that a go? I think you can get a very good 15" chromebook for around $300

I normally wouldn't recommend a refurbished laptop, but I've had very good experiences with refurbished Lenovo Thinkpads from Arrow Direct. I bought an "A grade" lease-return T420 from them a couple years ago and it looked like it had never been used. No wear on the keyboard, the only about two charging cycles on the battery. Must have been given to an exec who just shoved it in a drawer and forgot about it. I threw a 500GB Crucial M500 (FDE) SSD in it and it's a very usable system - I even do development with Visual Studio 2015 on it. I take it on business trips instead of the 15" Mac Pro I bought for myself earlier this year with company money. The original battery now only has about 50 charging cycles on it and is still has > than it's design capacity (50.21Wh vs 47.52Wh).

Just make sure you get a good warranty from a reputable company if you go the refurbished route.

If your wife's only problem with her current laptop is the battery, just buy a new one on Ebay.

The last 2 laptops I bought were both Dell. The last one lasted 10 years...the current one is going on 6.

Dell has great prices, support and customer service.

                  I like the Inspiron Series
