New Drone thread... All ideas welcome

Im really interested in getting a drone but i don't know much about them. What i do know is i would like one that is capable of streaming video back to me wile in flight and it needs to have a range greater than half a mile. Return to home is another thing i think i need.

So far it looks like the phantom 3 can do what i want it to do but it is quite a bit of money (~$550)and it seems a little out dated as far as features when you compare it to the phantom 4. I know the phantom 4 is a lot more money (~$1100) but it sounds like it might be worth it in the long run.

So please give my your thoughts and ideas about this. I am not against building my own but i want it to work easily once it is all set up. And i would need it spelled out because im not super tech savvy.

The old thread that seems to pertain to my interests here and is over 500 days old.

If you aren't super tech savy, I wouldn't bother building one. Just get yourself a DJI. I have built several multirotors and plane UAVS and you need to be prepared to deal with some quirks. The DJI stuff just works. It's like the apple of the drone world.

We're on our 3rd Phantom from DJI. Each one performed great and we upgraded as new features were added.

I am also looking at getting more into drones. Friend gave me his old one that uses your phone or tablet to control and all it did was frustrate me. Too slow to respond and trying to watch the camera while tilting it was a no go. I am seeing the Phantom 3 on Craiglist running in the $300-400 with spare parts and case that appear to be in good condition. Suspect a lot of the time people purchased it and then got bored

I started from Phantom 3 Professional and I have the Phantom 4 now. My farthest was 1.5 miles line of sight with the range booster from ebay. I could've have gotten farther but kinda getting nervous.

I'd look at the Phantom 4 and Yuneeq's Typhoon H drones today. I'll point out that the camera mount on the P3 is a bit lame. A simple crash can easily cost $600 or more. Ask me how I know.

Tip: if you think a tree is 100' tall, pay extra attention to setting your altitude at 150'! A good reason for buying a rangefinder for your long distance shooting too! Anyway, it's easy to get your depth perception all twisted around so flying by the numbers vs. looking through the camera can be safer at times.

If you're worried about the image quality, stills from 4K video are VERY impressive. Easily enough resolution for basic cropping too, depending on your use.

Also, consider getting insurance. Like motorcycles, crashing isn't an "if" thing. It's "when" you'll crash.

I am watching the Teal Drone. Their drone comes out soon and looks pretty impressive. Its original in that it has a serious Nvidia onboard computer that can do a lot more than just run the drone.

What does the Teal do that makes it worth $1300? Not criticizing i just don't understand.

Did you look at the specs ?

Can do more than just fly around , think of auto pilot on board . She is a very stable platform .

And look at her speed , wind resistance ( can really fight the wind )

Might be smarter than a smart phone , a lot smarter .

DJI clearly the leader on consumer drone and I own a Phantom 3 Pro and have been very happy with the features and performance of this drone and waiting on new models from DJI like the Mavic. It is expected to be released next week and it is very compact with folding arms and I am hoping it would be at least rain proof.

Depends on how much you want to spend .

You have /want the camera ? Go Pro or other ?

                            You want easy portability ?

You want / need to upgrade ? Parts availability for repair ( you will need to repair ) ?

You looking for new or used ? DJI can be found used a bit cheaper .

edit : hobbyist or commercial ?

I have a Phantom 4. My furthest flight was just over 2.5 miles, could have gone farther. With a tail wind I have gotten it up 53mph. And yes it does have return to home mode, just in case you loose connection to it. I have no regret in buying it. With a free software upgrade you can make 2D & 3D maps.
