    Secure your WiFi

Use WPA2 security, not WEP. Use a complex password. Don't broadcast your SSID.

As I sit here in my comfy chair in my den my smartphone can 'see' 3 other WiFi nets. At least they are using WPA2

Some devices can't connect if an SSID is not broadcasting. That's not as common but still happens. If you want to add another good layer, do MAC filtering.

Another is to limit how many ip addresses your router assigns.

Both of these are largely useless in the realm of security just so you are aware.

of course there is. but it has to do with multiple layers of security. hiding the ssid is useless, there are too many tools out there which do not require hiding ssid broadcasts.

mac filtering is better but not a fix-all option.

as with everything, its a mixture of multiple authentication levels.

The main thing is a strong password. I wouldn't use WPS either. Lots of people just use WPS to setup the network and leave the default password on the AP. Lots of home APs use a relatively small range of passwords and can be cracked very quickly by targeting that model AP.

Of course not. As you stated in your opening post WPA2 is as of yet un-cracked.

I was merely pointing out that hidden SSID and MAC filtering are of little use in that regard.

By themselves sure, but if you truly know security you know it's a layered approach. Hiding SSID, MAC filtering, limiting amount of DHCP addresses, and a strong WPA2 password are a lot better than just a WPA2 strong password.

Heck, if you want to get fancy, set up a Radius server and authenticate from a central location using a certificate.

BTW, I just did some searching and WPA2 had a vulnerability published having to do with the de-authentic/re-authenticate process.

                          Using only FREE software:
                          MACs are easily spoofed.
                          SSID non-broadcast is useless.

Nothing is really secure, only hardened.
