Time for a new motherboard

Ive been out of the loop given the last Asus motherboard I had lasted me since 09/2012. I need a new one and am looking for recommendations.

which was pretty damn good to me. I typically use this computer for photoshop with detailed actions , Fallout 4 , Skyrim and torrenting. I have an i7-3770K with 16GB of ram and a Corsair H100 for cooling , so I would like to remain compatible. Graphics card is an old GeForce GTX 660i which will be replaced later this year

Currently leaning towards ASUS TUF line or ASUS z170-PRO

There's not much difference between MOBOs, it all depends on how much features you want. (More then one video card slot, more usb3, ect) and most times a better power deliver(more phases with better control) and cooling(vrm heatsinks) system for that power delivery system(more extreme overclocking room).

If you don't care for much of that, I'd say just get the cheapest one you can find.

There's no reason to change the motherboard unless it fails. If you change the motherboard, get a new CPU, RAM, and graphics card.

A brand new computer would not cost you nearly that much, unless you plan on getting the best of everything.

You can easily build a brand new one for ~$600 for your needs.

If all you want is a new mobo, looks for the features you want, and buy the cheapest one out of them.

Well, it has been 3 years since I built my last PC.

Intel i7-4820K
Corsair H90 liquid cooling
MSI X79A-GD45 Plus mobo
Kingston PC3-12800H 16 gig memory (dual 8 gig)
ATI FirePro 2460 video card

Getting $1800 tax refund and don't feel like doing the smart thing and bank it.

Looking at i7-6600K, Asus Z170-K mobo, 16 gig DDR4 ram, m2 SSD as boot drive.
Since it has 2 PS/2 ports I think I can install Win 7 easily.

What is giving me pause is the installation of VS 2013, SQL Server 2008, Office 2013. They are MSDN copies and I worry about the s/n clearing registration. And oy vey, all the software I would have to install!

The N key rollover feature is free on ps2 but expensive on USB.

Your money though. If you are one of those wifi for the home guys then just get an ad-in card to bypass the mobo. MOBOS are not supposed to have that stuff anyways.

All it does is save you slots but I tend to use the mobo stuff as a backup if I have something better to put in. Now is your chance to try a new wifi card.

But your money, go to newegg and look at the reviews and compare them to amazon reviews... You should be able to find something decent that way.

I'd recommend an i5 processor for good price to performance. The i7 suffers from diminishing returns.

Use an Intel wireless card with 802.11n or 802.11ac support.
The 802.11ad cards don't necessarily meet specifications, but the Intel chips work with the broadcom chips. I'd wait on those until next year at least.

First and foremost I HATE wifi for PCs/Towers. Find a way to run those cables but if you absolutely MUST run wifi for a PC, then I would certainly go with a popular and middle line one.

This one sells at various spots for around $40 or less and It seems like it has a popular following. TP-LINK I am not sure of as a company but for some odd reason they have a HUGE list of buyers and an even LONGER list of reviews that are positive just about everywhere you go. I am not certain what to make of them but I have their wifi modem ready as a backup when my current modem fails and the modem I got had excellent reviews...

TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 Dual Band Wireless N900 (Atheros chipset seems to work with linux/ubuntu/winblows and mac..., but double check my opinion)

They make several others so if you have the cash, buy TWO, this one and another model and hopefully this one will work and the other can be exchanged or kept for a backup (with testing first to verify that it works)

Maybe even this one: Asus Wireless-N USB USB-N53

And if your signal sucks anywhere then I would be sure to get a signal extender for the network and place it in the room or hallway. Repeaters work...
