    Replacing UPS battery

I've got an old Geek Squad UPS. It's the 875VA model, and it came with a 12V 9ah battery. The battery died and I had a 7ah battery that was good, so I put it in there. So, I just got to wondering if that was a bad idea. I don't care how long the battery runs if the power goes out, as long as I can get a couple minutes to shut down. What I do care about is if it was to catch on fire or something. Anybody know?

No fire hazard. Under the same load with a higher ah rated battery, it just won't last as long. Amphours has to do with discharge rate.

I know you said you don't care how long it lasts, but just FYI - If there's a "time-remaining' indicator on the front of the UPS, it won't be accurate because the algorithm used by the UPS to calculate the time remaining vs amp draw is based on the higher ah battery you replaced.

Probably okay, but it depends on how many amps the devices plugged in are drawing. The UPS should have a circuit that measures the voltage on the battery, and shuts down if it drops to much.

Yes, it does have a time-remaining indicator, but I really don't care. Any time I've had a power outage I've been able to shut down my computer in about a minute or two. I guess if I wasn't at the computer it might take me an extra minute or so to get to it, but as long as it lasts 4 mins then I'm good.

The computer itself is not a fancy computer that takes lots of power due to extra components. I'd give you a power consumption rating, but I'm not at home right now.

        Thanks for your input.

Yeah, only means that instead of 25 minutes you got 21 minutes of backup time...
