those base specs are still very decent. swap the HD with a SSD, get a better video card (and PSU if needed), install Win10 using your Windows8 key and you should be able to use that for another 3 years easy.
what exactly is "heavy business apps" that you cant do on an i7 3.4 with 16gb ram?Comment

You don't give much detail of exactly what's gone wrong, or even what you've got - there are what, 6 generations of i7 now. Any of the recent several are plenty capable. Maybe you're just ready for something new, fine.
If it's simply current performance of a once great computer, a lot of dissatisfaction with aging PCs derives from the OS getting "senile" and can be fixed by simply re-installing the OS. Also, if you have Win8 Pro, you can downgrade to Win7Pro in legit fashion, with Microsoft's blessing.
I agree the user interface in Win 8 sucks, but otherwise it's supposed to be a decent performer. You can bury a lot of the hassle of the new interface by installing Windows Classic Shell, and restoring the familiar look and operation of Windows 7.
It could be a repairable hardware issue as well. More detail would help if you'd be just as happy to have the old performer back.Comment

Not to totally thread jack, but I thought the recent upgrades with Windows 7 added the same Microsoft spyware as is part of win 10?Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

what are you going to use the machine for? what kind of mileage are you thinking youll get?I've been looking to replace one my HP Desktops (i7 3.4Ghz, 16 GB ram, 1 TB hd, Win 8.0). I bought it a few years back at Costco. I hate Win 8, very happy with Win 7, but I'm not sure if I should upgrade to Win 10...
One of the major problems is that is seems like recently, the machines I've looked at (Costco, Sam's, Amazon, Best Buy, etc..) have really bad ratings.
I am trying to stay in the $800 range for the machine only.
I recently purchased a Win 7 HP laptop at Costco and had to return it. Junk!
I purchased another Win 7 HP laptop direct, incredibly slow, should have returned it!
Where do you tech guys/gals purchase reliable and affordable machines?
Is it even possible to get a reliable Win 7 machine anymore?Comment

I use multiple machines for small business use. I require minimum 4-5 years life expectancy.
Over the years, I've had good luck with HP. I would like to remain with them.
I'm thinking that I'll switch to their commercial machines as suggested above. It just costs more.
It seems as though the new and upcoming software makes the machines obsolete about every 2 years or sooner.NRA PATRON LIFE MEMBERComment

The BEST way to buy a Dell Computer is via Teacher/Student Discount. I registered at the local community college. I bought the Adobe CS6 Master Collection for $799, Retail $2,899, and saved similarly on the purchase of the Dell Computer and Microsoft Office Pro with 2 computer user agreements perfect for a laptop desktop combo.
And I took the night classes at the local community college for a few semesters learning Adobe Acrobat Pro, Dreamweaver and Flash.
The Academic Superstore offers lots of Teacher Student Discounts.Comment

One thing that will slow any machine down is all the extra software that gets installed nowadays from the factory. Many refer to this software as "bloatware". Whether you get a new machine, or choose to reuse your old equipment, make sure you go through the system (get help if you need to) and remove all the extra software and crap that you don't need. This usually makes the computer run faster and with fewer crashes.I've been looking to replace one my HP Desktops (i7 3.4Ghz, 16 GB ram, 1 TB hd, Win 8.0). I bought it a few years back at Costco. You might consider simply buying a new hard drive (and more memory) and installing it in your old computer. Use Windows 7 Professional. Do not use Windows 8 or even 10 as 10 has it's own problems. If you do this, do NOT have your old drive installed in the computer when you install the new hard drive, load Windows 7, and load all your apps. ONLY when the rebuilt system is up and running (normally will only take a few hours to do everything) do you want to install your old hard drive in the slave position. Once you do that, you can easily access all your files from the old drive and transfer them to the new drive. After you're done with that, remove the old drive and put it in a file cabinet somewhere.Let us not pray to be sheltered from dangers but to be fearless when facing them. - Rabindranath Tagore
