7 vs 10 on PC

Suggesting a chrome book is idiotic. Did they ever add capability to run android apps or are you still restricted to chrome apps?

Why don't you tell the OP how great it is to replace his crappy netbook running windows with, guess what, a crappy netbook running chrome os. It's the equivalent of an 11" phone with a keyboard, except that my phone has more storage, higher resolution, and built in WAN.

Enlighten me on how a chrome book is all the computer one will ever need, just perfect for... web browsing... You at least could have suggested an android tablet where there's better app support, but you're hung up on an enterprise netbook.

lol, chromebooks are selling well every year. the whole reason windows 10 is free is because MS wanted to nip chrome in the bud before it took off any further.

you seriously need to do some research before speaking to topics you know nothing about. if you actually read up, you wouldnt have to ask questions like if android apps work with chrome OS. you also wouldnt need me to enlighten you because you would actually educate yourself.

a modern day android phone is well over $400. a chromebook is well under $200. built in WAN is a feature that most laptops and chromebooks do not come with. when they are added, theyre priced at a premium.

The first pc is far superior to the second. Double the ram, heck, 4gb is considered pretty minimal these days and with an 80gb hd? that is going to over fill pretty dang quick.

As for the operating systems, it is not a factor. I was a windows 7 user, I totally rejected windows 8 and now use windows 10. I like 7 and now I like 10. By the way, if you have windows 7 or 8, you get a prompt when you connect online to upgrade for free to windows 10. so you could keep the 7 or upgrade to 10 at no cost. you just let it download and install, does not even delete or move any of your files. Like with anything I always say, get the best you can afford. You will have less regrets that way.

Op, check out microcenter's off lease refurbished computer deals.

I've had really good luck with these Lenovo systems and think they'd make an excellent choice for home users.

Check out their refurbished laptops too.

Brand wise, I prefer Lenovo over Dell or HP.

Based on the specs am assuming the use is mostly going to be browsing, email and light work.

As such will still recommend going for current hardware, which is available around 400-600 and will be well supported for years

Investment in SSD is huge for overall performance, it can give life to much older machines in terms of speed.

Also don't be on XP, either go Linux or Windows 10

Maybe try a Linux flavor (Ubuntu) on the old netbook before spending any money.

Have you ever felt like your attempts to evangelize for Linux were like talking to a wall? People are too attached to their Windows/Mac. It's like trying to explain why somebody would not want to be Republican OR Democrat.

Lubuntu would be the first OS I'd try. Trying to upgrade the RAM might be helpful.

OP: I wouldn't touch those PCs unless it was your only option. You can do much better for a little more money, if you are looking used. (I got a macbook pro for $150, as an example). You just have to be patient and look around.

Aside from that, if you save up only a bit more money than that, you can find really decent full fledged win laptops around $300, sometimes less. They will last you 4-5 years easy.

That is the way I would go, personally.

As for Win 7 vs 10. 10 is 7, with 8's Metro UI, if you want to use it.

I like 10 a lot and I'm still using 7 on my work PC. I have no problem's with 10. For me, it runs just like 7.

However, if you get a PC with a legit copy of 7, you can upgrade until about Sept of this year to Win 10 for free. So you could upgrade, register your PC for 10 and then choose which of the two OS's you want to use. Use 7 if you want. Use 10 if you want. And you will have the option to go to 10 in the future if MS decides to stop supporting 7.

BTW, the point of the chromebooks, when they first came out was that they were cheap and you got decent capabilities piggybacked off of the google-verse.

There really is not a point (unless you really want one) to get a chrome book anymore because you can get a full fledged (decent) win 10 laptop for only a little money more now, and you can also access the google verse. So you get the best of both worlds, win OS and chrome/google, for only a little more money.

I certainly would not buy a straight chrome book anymore. I mean you can get entry level HP win 10 laptops for $200 and better lenovo think pads or ASUS laptops, if you grab one on a sale for $300. You have more flexibility that way.

Asus has fine laptops in the sub $500 range. Unless you're doing something specific or looking for specific features, any in that category will accomplish your daily takes.
