7 vs 10 on PC

Wife has a windows netbook with 1G ram which is pretty slow.
No experience with windows 8 or 10


Found these two desktop relatively cheap.
one is Dell Optiplex 745 with the following specs:

Intel Pentium D Processor @ 3.4 GHz)
4 GB DDR2 Memory
320 GB Hard Drive
CD-RW/DVD-ROM Optical Drive

Windows 7 Professional
Office 2013 Professional Plus
$75 or $60 without warranty

the other is Dell Optiplex GX620
Intel Pentium 4 with Hyper-Threading Processor @ 3 GHz)
2 GB DDR2 Memory
80 GB Hard Drive
CD/DVD-ROM Optical Drive

Windows 10 Enterprise
Office 2013 Pro Plus
$50 or $40 without warranty

The OS and office are NOT trial versions.

Chromebooks are junk, unless you're specifically looking for a limited use, non-windows machine.

OP, the computers you described are horrible... there are tons of deals out there for inexpensive new or refurb systems, $200 - $400 is normal, and you'll be much better off and happier for the years you'll use it.

the vast majority of computer users use basic office programs, email and internet tools. all of these do not need a windows based machine. if the op uses office, he can subscribe to office 365 for a yearly fee or get free office from google.

Suggesting a chrome book is idiotic. Did they ever add capability to run android apps or are you still restricted to chrome apps?

Why don't you tell the OP how great it is to replace his crappy netbook running windows with, guess what, a crappy netbook running chrome os. It's the equivalent of an 11" phone with a keyboard, except that my phone has more storage, higher resolution, and built in WAN.

Enlighten me on how a chrome book is all the computer one will ever need, just perfect for... web browsing... You at least could have suggested an android tablet where there's better app support, but you're hung up on an enterprise netbook.

I used the new Chromebook Flip for a few weeks....it suffers from some hardware issues so I had to return it. Such a pity since the form factor is AMAZING (sub 2lb convertible).

OP, if your wife somehow lived with 1GB of RAM this whole time, I don't think she'll care what you buy her. The machines you listed would drive me insane.

OP, spend $400 and get a nice laptop that will last for years. Or spend $250ish on a nice android tablet. I would go samsung. Maybe look for a refurb deal.

So, the most important question here that no one seems to have asked:

What are you going to use this computer for? Are there any specific programs you want/need installed?

I'll add my voice to the posters suggesting getting a new computer (or at the very least a factory refurb). Warranties on 2nd hand computers/parts tend not to cover much.

all computers that I upgraded to Win 10 from Windows 7 or 8 started working faster. One of them was an old Dell Optiplex desktop with 2 or 4GB RAM. I do not recall the exact model. I can check it on Monday. It started working faster as well. The downside of Windows 10 from my experience is a compatibility problem with old programs or in some cases it may take an afford to upgrade. User interface of win 10 is similar to win 7. From my experience if you do not deal with very old programs Win 10 would be preferable. Win 10 upgrade is currently free, so if a Win 7 based system is cheaper you can upgrade it to win 10 later. 2GB RAM is too small these days, it will be slow. 4GB is probably minimum for Windows OS. Pentium D is dual core faster than Pentium 4. 745 model seems newer than GX645 and has faster CPU according to their description. Latest and fastest with larger memory is always better for a computer. In this case in my opinion Pentium d with 4GB RAM is better than Pentium 4 with 2GB RAM. Win 7 can be upgraded to Win 10 for free. Office 2013 Professional is good enough.
