in command promt, type

netsh winsock reset

and restart computer

i have been thinking about updating to 10 just because. I have 8.1 on my gaming laptop and WIN7 pro version on desktop. love 7 since I installed it.

I have good and bad things about 10 but I know a guy who installed 10 on his laptop and zero issues so far he likes it. he's tech guy so i'll take his advice.

I may download it and install next week.

Folks make sure if you updated your current window version to 10 make sure you back it up, not internally but get an ext. HD now this days those are darn cheap. I recently updated to 10 and was very happy about it everything works including programs that runs on 7 and 8. There were another update needed to install and totally im not aware it was installing in the background. without knowing i shutdown and restarted my computer for several days and the installation was still going on. Finally it corrupted the windows 10 for some reason and i manage to download the ISO image od windows 10 from microsoft and re-install it and i chose keep my files and applications. After i had it install ALL MY FILES, DOCS, PICS, VIDS ARE GONE!!! darn you windows 10. i manage to backup but not all. So please remember to back up your files not internally but get an EXTERNAL DRIVE and back it up from there. MS OFFICE 2013, Student version, 360 works and im sure other apps too but maybe not to old like from Win NT, 2000 and Vista. Thanks my Bros!

Windows 10 can run almost all of the Windows 7 programs, few may need to be re-installed and very few need to be run using compatibility mode.

It is worth the upgrade, in rare cases you may need to install it fresh to minimize upgrade issues.

Any program giving issues in Windows 10 can be run under compatibility mode (Right click on Properties to access the tab)

Running Windows 7 Pro and would like to upgrade to 10. Is there a stand-alone app that will tell me which existing programs will not run under 10?

A few months ago there was an icon on the task bar that would allow me to check for compatibility but it no longer appears. If I was to go to Windows Update, there is no option to check for compatibility (only to check the box to d/l Win 10).

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > then under Advanced Options you can setup either Automatic, Scheduled or Defer updates

It is advisable to set it at least Scheduled, as otherwise critical updates may get delayed

Why does a major profitable free market corporation offer a $200 software application free of charge?
I don't know, but I can speculate.
What I have is good for at least 10 more years.
At that point I will load the free version of Windows 30. ...

Its easy, just a business strategy which makes sense.

This particular Windows is unique the same code can run from devices, phones, tablets, PCs, Server, Xbox to Halo lens. Also its not just the Kernel, but the Application Model itself with scalable UI framework or headless (no UI)

So a $35 Raspberry Pi runs Windows 10 IOT, or the same code as a nano Server in the Cloud.

Benefits

- One code base to develop, support & Maintain. So less cost
- One development tool, so efficient development. Universal apps, so develop for Desktop and with minor changes use the same code for Phones, Xbox, Halo lens.
- Develop for iOS, Android using the same IDE
- Larger population on a similar version, less fragmentation. Which is good for developers
- OS can be updated on a weekly basis, more efficient and easy to roll features and fixes


Making it free enabled it to grow to a 200 million user base within months, the fastest adoption ever for any Windows (fastest for any desktop OS as well)

My main complaint about Windows 10 is the new calculator program.
I launch it from my keyboard and it pops under my current program, I click it to bring it forward, start typing, and nothing happens until I click in the "display"

It's also too large. Ya, it can be down-sized, but the characters are too small.
I'd love to have the old calc program back.

I'm not crazy about it's "native" interface with the cloud and browsers.
When I'm searching for an item, I want to specify WHERE it will search and not default to searching every folder and history cache it can find.

Feature request can be sent through Windows 10, or upvoted so as to get prioritized in the next release.

I upgraded my old i7 laptop from windows 7 to 10. It was a major mistake. The file explorer on windows 10 is crap. It takes forever to copy files and it would crash or just freeze. I got tired of it an wanted to reinstall windows 7. It said my restore copy was corrupted. It was destroyed by windows 10 install. I got tired of Microsoft BS and installed ubuntu on my laptop instead. Glad to be rid of windows 10.

I think its time to bite the bullet and upgrade. I rely on QuickBooks 2010 - good to hear there are no issues. I'm happy with Windows 7 but there comes a time when there is no choice to upgrade. And as I understand, upgrading past July 26, 2016 and upgrading will cost money (on a subscription basis).

Aren't they going subscription for everyone? Annual fee or it stops working. Like Office 365. Sure, you get 5 computers and 5 "devices" but they stop working if you don't renew.

As I understand, upgrades AFTER Windows 10 are annual subscription only (about $200/yr). Don't renew and you're screwed.

If I'm correct, I'm surprised the FTC or other proper federal agency doesn't investigate this (not that I'm saying an injustice will be served).

there is currently no Windows subscription model that has been announced.

Microsoft is currently giving away Windows 10 to Windows 7 and 8/8.1 users to get as many computers upgraded to 10 as possible. this promotion runs until June 2016. after that, any Win7/8/8.1 users that want to upgrade to 10 would need to pay for the upgrade. that does not mean that any existing windows 10 users will need to pay a subscription to keep using it.

Microsoft has said that once you have Win10, you get to keep Win10. it doesn't expire. any future Win10 updates should be free for those that already have Win10. Just like Service Packs were free to XP, 7, etc.

that doesn't mean that Microsoft can't decide to release Win11 in the future and decide to charge for that. and if they want to offer a subscription plan for that upgrade, nothing illegal about that.

My inner struggle is Windows 7 works very well for me (and my office). We're also still using Office 2010 and see no reason to upgrade. Most of our business software is 6+ yrs old and does the job (even QuickBooks). Nevertheless, I know there comes a time that I can no longer (technologically) live in the past.
