UPDATE: Microsoft has backtracked - says they got too aggressive

Microsoft has gone aggressive with its push to get users onto Windows 10, including setting the upgrade to automatically download through Windows Update.

"As part of our effort to bring Windows 10 to existing genuine Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 customers, the Windows 10 upgrade may appear as an optional update in the Windows Update (WU) control panel," a Microsoft spokeswoman said in an email Thursday when replying to Computerworld's questions. "This is an intuitive and trusted place people go to find Recommended and Optional updates to Windows. In the recent Windows update, this option was checked as default; this was a mistake and we are removing Windows 10 from Windows Update for users that have not reserved a copy of Windows 10."

Got this email today after wasting 30 minutes trying to run Windows updates without the Win 10 install.

Microsoft antagonizes users with intrusive new Windows 10 upgrade tactics

After I was forced to install Windows 8, I shut off all automatic updates. Looks like they are doing the same thing again.

This sort of makes me wonder about all the computerized junk on the new cars.

I really hate having to get rid of perfectly good peripherals and programs because a company updates it's operating system every couple of years. Will forced obsolescence be the future for our wheels?

Thanks all that helped on this issue.

            Respectfully

(Boot a Knoppix CD/DVD and move the folder C:\Windows\System32\GWX somewhere else if you aren't running an encrypted drive?)

                  1. Open "Windows Update"
                  2. Click "Change Settings" button on left of window
                  3. Uncheck "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates"
                  4. Change the "Important Updates" option to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download/install them."

                  5. Click Start, type "cmd" in the search box, right click the "cmd.exe" option and choose "Run as Administrator"

In the command window, copy/paste the following:

                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3065988 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:2976978 /quiet /norestart

                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3050265 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3050267 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3075851 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:2902907 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3068708 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3022345 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:2952664 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:2990214 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3035583 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:971033 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3021917 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3044374 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3046480 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3075249 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3080149 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3083325 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3083324 /quiet /norestart
                  wusa /uninstall /kb:3035583 /quiet /norestart

After it's finished, restart your computer, open Windows Update, under "Optional Updates" be sure to right-click and hide those nasty updates, ESPECIALLY 3035583, 2952664, and 3021917.

Now you can reset your preferences to auto download/apply updates if you want.

So far this process has worked. No update icon in the system tray.

It's baaaaaack! This AM, that Win 10 upgrade popped back up again. It would not "hide" or stay unchecked until I let it start the download then abort it. At that point the regular update was possible and the W-10 upgrade could be hidden---AGAIN.

In the last two days there have been 29 or 30 "KB-updates" but have not found the one that triggers this round of time wasting aggravation. So far I have not found anything relating to this "push" by MS on Google--maybe later today. Obviously MS doesn't want W-10 to stay hidden.

Any feedback on this latest push is welcome.

                      Respectfully
