This might be true for windows 8 and 10 as well.
I was wiping out a used HD to reinstall windows 7 for someone and Inside the windows folder I found a folder named "ServiceProfiles".
I think there was another folder in it named networkservice and one named localservice.
Looking at it through my normal windows 7 it tells me access is denied and does NOT give me a space count for what it takes up.
But on the HD that I was redoing, there were 6 GB of files.
The files looked like album covers, Like CD art and the majority were either sized at 27k, 48k, or 44k, and they all had different names, like a cache name or something and there were 22000+ files. I kept clicking on random files and they were the same graphic, just different names.
I was only able to look at the JPG files, I did not see anything else because of filters. I was in a hurry but I made a note of it so that I could return. I only found it because I was moving things to directories using Hiren's 15.2.
Now I wanna boot up with Hirens and look at mine. Directory Opus says that it is blocked and that access is denied unless I run it as an administrator.
So if you have had your windows 7 8 or 10 running for a while, most likely windows 7 or 8 for most folks, you should run explorer in admin mode and have a look in these directories. They seem to duplicate a profile at one point, that was where all of the files were hidden and repeated. I only have 189MB in mine apparently. I do not think these are system files and I do not think they need to be duplicated so many times...
I checked mine because once again I am down to SUB 500MB of free space after clearing up 3.8GB just three weeks ago. This goddamn windows 7 is growing faster than a sulcata tortoise. And I have updates turned off.
Just saying...
Ahh... I found this on it: The extra comments reinforce this crap.
Here might be the fix for it: Turn off the Windows Media Player Network sharing service.
Makes me wonder what else I will find poking around.
