Nitrogen cooled...awesome...
I wonder why he had to disable the HT and some of the physical cores
Either way interesting stuff...Kyle "Kenosha Kid" Rittenhouse did nothing wrong -
HT and extra cores generate more heat.NRA Life Member

All that just to play Crisis 3 on high settings...
I hope he can at least play Minecraft; I mean, it DOES only have a single core now...7 Billion people on the planet. They aint ALL gonna astronauts. Some will get hit by trains...
Need GOOD SS pins to clean your brass? Try the new and improved model...

Yup, the biggest problem you still have in extreme OCing is that the material around the chip is acting much more like an insulator than a conductor when you are trying to pump that much heat wattage through it. So even with liquid nitrogen on the processor you are going to have an extremely cold surface, but you will be nuking the traces only a few hundred microns away.
Turn off the other cores, disable the features that actually use more processor power (remember that OCing a processor only increases the speed at which it could do processing work, have it actually do less, just at really high speed) and you are simultaneously decreasing the overall power generated (in heat) and you are increasing the surface area that will be cold, compared to the volume of the chip actually generating heat.Originally posted by kcbrownI'm most famous for my positive mental attitude.

It hasn't really been worth it to me to overclock for several years now. More power/ heat for incremental gains of a few FPS isn't worth it. Same reason I usually go with the #2 CPU/ videocard model available when I build a system- I'm getting 90% of the performance for usually around 60% of the price.Comment

Nothing new. Just like back in the days, a gentleman making a LN2 cooled fluorinert cooled system to achieve extreme levels of overclocking. There are still inherrent hardware limits that will affect stability.
I agree with the "no need" camp. Tech is so far beyond current SW needs I can't believe there hasn't been a major crash in hardware sales.Comment

i'm on a i5-3330 still. i'll still wait until this computer is fried, like last time.

If I remember correctly I'm on a 4770. Enough power to last me for years to come if current performance indicates anything. My GPU is my current graphics limiter, and has been for a while, and game designers are finding more and more ways to offload to the massively parallel processing of GPU pipelines, so I don't see that as changing any time soon.Originally posted by kcbrownI'm most famous for my positive mental attitude.

Kewl!
I recently built a new rig with an i5 4690k. Haven't had a need to overclock it. Maybe in a year or two when games get even thirstier for resources...Originally posted by POLICESTATEAmericans who seek to take away liberty and property from others are not true Americans. Thats cool but the 4790k broke 7ghz over a year ago and they only had to disable 2 cores.
This guy did 6ghz with all cores and hyper threading still active.
A Spanish enthusiast has managed to overclock his Intel Core i7-4790K “Devil’s Canyon” microprocesso
My 4790k is nice and stable at 4.5ghz which is plenty for me for now.Comment

I overclock my systems, they run cooler than stock with the right watercooling and or delidding the CPUs. They are rock stable as I severely test all them them. Liquid Nitrogen ovclocking just to get a system to post or run an app real quick does not interest me. Heck overclocking to the point where I can detect any system instability isn't worth it to me either. But I'll take an extra 1k Mhz if it's stable running that way.
I go against the trend in the way I overclock, which for me means 24-7 test of the biggest baddest stress test out there. Hell these days most PC's that are NOT overclocked won't run these on air cooling, as the temps get out of control and throttling initiates as they are not real world loads.Comment
