Looking for a multitrack video editor to put an overlay onto a video...

I do NOT want to use Premiere.

I think I have a version of Intermedia something that I got a while back but I was wanting to do the following:

Take a slide (which I have, a 1920x1080 photo of a tree with the background sky removed and a dark purple/bluish filter put over it to give it a night time look).

and put a video underneath it (a particle video loop to be exact)

The outcome is a 6 second video loop where there is a tree in the foreground and the night sky where the stars and rays of light are dancing about.

I have other videos to try out too but I did this in proshow and it wants me to combine the slide and video, but I can not place an overlay on top of the video like I could in Premiere or other multi track editors. Combining the slide and the video would be great except for the fade to black at the end of the video that I can not seem to get rid of (transition) even when I CUT it out. I could not seem to shake that black, and this is going to be a loop so when I eventually make it into an SWF, it should not look like it starts and stops. It should just go and go and go...

Is there an easy to load up multitrack editor that works or do I have to go hunt down the software that came with my video capture cards/ studio?

Is there a quick and dirty way to do it nicely? I just want to put the video under the slide and output it to an avi, then I can convert the AVI to an SWF and put it up on the web.

    Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Easiest way I know of is an app called Green Screen by Do Ink. It works on the iPad, not sure about other platforms. You'll have to make a mask to keep the stars off your tree but it's simple. My kids use it.
