Who makes a decent router?

Since I have been plugging in my routers to a UPS (mine are all simulated sine-wave), I can't remember the last time I had to reboot a router do to no internet connectivity.

Routers have come a LONG way, (and without a cable modem to add another point of failure) it might be the newer tech, but my old ones had to be rebooted from time to time, until I put them on a UPS...

Blackhawk is the way I am probably going to go, as Verizon routers actually send back SSID and pass-phrase. (I was going to do a screenshot, but apparently verizon is trying to make me verify my last bill, or payment, and they have the data wrong on both counts, yet another VZ web site screw-up, like ANY time they change their site...)

Actually, I would recommend a Cisco 2821. They can be had on eBay for under $100, and I can tell you from experience, they're very good. We used to run them on broadband connections with VPN tunnels for some of our remote sites.

Either that, or if you don't mind rolling your own, get any cheap x86 box, two NIC's, and set up OpenBSD on it. A month ago, I did a workshop on how to do just this, and my own (a Sun Ultra 5 "pizza box") has been running very well since 2007. Of course, I've upgraded the OS over the years, but it's been dead-nuts reliable.

So I upgraded from a netgear WGT624 to a Cisco/Linksys EA6500. I want to say it was $250.

Linksys = junk hardware, junk firmware.
Netgear = leess junkie hardward, junk software.

Asus makes really good routers.

ASUS makes excellent routers = excellent hardware, very good firmware.

I bought the asus one and it was a lot of money, it died so soon and it was past the 30 days i cant belive it.

i went on ebay and bought a replacement WRT54G firewall with the new ddwrt firmware and its rock solid.

you cant go wrong with the linksys, its cisco hardware but for the home market. its no different than enterprise hardware even my work has a linksys.

Can't be further from the truth. While Linksys is owned by Cisco, it has no lineage to enterprise Cisco hardware. Linksys = junk.

linksys hardware is the same mine says cisco on it and its been 100% uptime

i use mine with Killer NIC M1 Gaming Network Card and its best performance for frags and fps.

Oh snap! Be truthful with us Leland are you seriously still running a 32 bit PCI device in 2015? While the Killer NIC M1 worked fine it was easily bested by Intel cards at the same price point. The last I remember of PCI I was running 2 3DFX Banshees in SLI to get a high enough frame rate at 1024x768 to play Quake, or maybe it was Unreal. I should have saved some money and bought a card from this new unheard of company called Nvidia.

Once AGP became obsolete and pci-e became the standard, PCI was mostly just kept to support legacy products. Server related products held on for quite a bit longer. Guess what I'm trying to ask is, what motherboard are you using that actually still has a PCI 32 bit slot?

For not more than the price point when the Killer NIC M1 was still being produced you can now buy an Intel 10 Gb card.

This. Cisco enterprise class routers will beat anything you can find at Best Buy. Don't confuse their enterprise gear for that crap with a linksys badge on it. there is a reason why Cisco sold off linksys. Cisco is #1 in marketshare for Route/Switch..and it is not close.

Just switched from ATT Uverse 12Mbps to Charter 60Mbps. Price per month for the Charter is the same as ATT for the first 12 months, after that it is $20 more per month.

Picked up an ASUS rt-n56u on Amazon for about 90 bucks. Theres a $10 rebate from 9/15 to 9/30. (Crap! I forgot to use the Calguns Amazon 2A link.)

Of course it's working perfectly now. I'll send up update in a month or so.
