    Laptop for 10 year old

My son wanted a chrome book for Christmas which he has already outgrown. Now, he wants a laptop to play Mine craft. He says you can do lots of things on it that you can't do on his Xbox version of Mine craft.

So, what kind of laptop should we get him? What should we look for in terms of features, etc..?

He'll be paying for it himself with money he's saved. Mom and dad will help out too if need be.

P.S. she just told me you can't use mods-adding new weapons, and other things of that sort, and slim block she doesn't know for sure if they have or have not added it to the xbox version.

If you go to fleabay and look for a HP NC6400 you will find plenty of laptops that are under $100 that are still good laptops for many things.

My reading indicates he needs a better than average graphics card for it to work well. We'd like to keep it around $600.

Then look for a Dell Lattitude M2400 with the nVidia graphics and the high res screen.

It should also have a T99 cpu and will take up to 8GB of RAM. Drop in an SSD and a dvd burner and you are good to go, total package is around $400 after you buy other addons.

Else expect a price tag of around $200.

I have one of these. I built mine. I picked the case/main parts and then purchased the addons to give me a killer WIFI card, no SSD, but a DvD Burner, Backlit Keyboard and I finally got my T99 CPU, but I have to move my old parts from the other unit to this one. Oh yeah, and I got a 12 Cell extended battery and a Slice Battery, I have 16 hours of battery power with a travel charger.

The only REAL drawback is that this laptop is great, but it uses DDR2 RAM which will run you about $150 for 8GB of it. Meanwhile you can get 8GB of DDR3 for about half that in the Sodimm stuff. The Next model series up will have similar offerings, but they will also offer an i5 or i7 CPU and will use the DDR3. Expect to pay closer to around $350+ for those models.

Good luck and hope you find a decent machine. They are plentiful but I have been eyeballing them since they are decent work horses.

Hmmm, prices seem to have dropped a bit.

This is not a bad laptop at all for any kid. The only real weakspot is the CPU. But you can always buy a T99 and swap it out too.

If you want kids to have a future that isn't a $10/hour Apple "Genius", or a Walmart greeter, then get them a non-Mac.

I disagree only because mac is one OS that is hell trying to set up virus's and all that other crap the scumbags try to destroy our systems. It is basically a Lenox OS.

I paid last year something like $400 for a 14" HP touch screen laptop for my daughter. She plays Minecraft a lot and it works fine. I believe it is intel i3 with 4GB memory. My teen son was checking last year laptops for gaming and the best bang for the buck we found was AMD with Radeon graphics. You may check deals on bestbuy.com for 2 in 1 touch screen laptops. There are models around $400 or so that should be cool for kids. Apple laptops are considered cool but they are way more expensive.

My kid goes outside all the time, the problem is, you very rarely see any other kids in the neighborhood out to play with, he ends up riding his scooter or bike around by himself. One neighbor kid just wants to come in our house and play XBOX or the computer. I tell them to get outside.

Wise policy. I let my daughter play video game limited time only, otherwise kids never stop. Luckily our neiboughs seem to follow a similar policy so kids mostly play outside in the daytime.

Get a desktop rather than a laptop if you can as you can get a better computer for the same price.

If you are set on a laptop, look at Dell outlet/refurbished computers from Dell. Find a 25% off coupon for outlet computers and you can get some decent computers for around $600. You need to look for the coupons and may need to wait for them to come around, but they are pretty common.

Dell provides technology solutions, services & support. Buy Laptops, Touch Screen PCs, Desktops, Servers, Storage, Monitors, Gaming & Accessories
