I've never paid for any anti-virus, and believe you me, I frequent some pretty iffy websites.

I also let folks how are afraid to visit such sites use my PC.

I've had good results with Malwarebytes and Avast free editions.

Avast boot-time scan takes a while and sometimes it needs a bit of attention mid-scan THEN it take a while to finish, but seems to get everything I've run into and my PCs are up and running fine.
Am I a good shot!?!, YEAH I'M A GOOD SHOT!....i just got bad aim

Just use the built-in Microsoft Defender in Windows 8/8/1, if on. Windows 7 use Microsoft Security Essentials. It does the job, will not nag but keep it updated.

All my machines run Microsoft Defender/Essentials for over 5 years now and never going to buy any other product.

I also recommend NOD32. Have used it in the office (network of 8 computers) for many years without a hiccup. ...and not that you asked, but with NOD32 & Malwarebytes installed, you should have no worries.
