Stupid update for Samsung S5 ruined phone!

Is this a mandatory update? If it's not, don't do it. I learned with my old Win98 box to never update; I was always pissed with all the stuff that got messed up after one...and then try to undue it. I guess this is why they came up with being able to go back to a reset point and leave well enough alone.

I have the S5 Active and the biggest issue I now have is the home screen button doesn't take me to the home screen. Instead, Google Play comes up. Did some internet searching and a soft reset is supposed to help. Just remove the battery for about 5 minutes and re-install.

This worked for me and the phone seems fine again. I didn't want to do a factory reset as I have a lot of photos on my phone that I want to retain.

Move pics to computer, factory, copy photos back, or always opt for something with a MicroSD card and "issue resolved".

I don't know why people just keep all their pics on their phone anyway w/no backups. Flash is only good for so many years, and although it's about ~10 years (they say), anything that you don't have on two separate storage devices is data you don't care about anyway.

I could never go iPhone, or anything w/out a MicroSD card, as "WHEN" the thing dies there is no way to get your photos out... if you haven't duped them elsewhere. At least w/a removable storage card you can remove it to pull data, even if it has to be carved from a dying card (Read Only).

Dropbox is a wonderful thing ... I take a picture, and boom - it's in dropbox and downloaded to my desktop 30 seconds later. No SD card required.

Well, first off, I started having separate logins for me and my wife after she filled up my bookmarks with coupons and hairstyles. Then with the advent of coupon toolbars which are just barely concealed malware, and her inability to avoid clicking on daily deals and such, I just got her an entirely separate laptop. I use my computer to make money, and can't afford to have issues caused by her poor browsing habits. Or issues caused by her dropping the computer repeatedly.

And also, jesus, you're not supposed to take pictures of the ones with pointy elbows. It's the blunt elbows you want.

Probably my delusional paranoia of non-privacy, but I don't drop files on anything I can't shoot, or "dd if=/dev/zero of=[SomeDevice] bs=1M".

Android is open, Verizon and AT&T are not, they are the ones pushing this junk. Buying outright and you do not have to deal with Knox but a lot of people can't justify 700 dollars on a phone.
You can even run Android without a single google app, and a lot of the cheaper Android devices come that way.

I just updated my S5 the other day. I noticed a slight lag(not all the time) but does not bother me. I can finally use text messaging with Uconnect. I can text and drive now, nice.

I've had about the same service coverage with Sprint, Virgin mobile, VZW, and T-Mobile... so I opted for WiFi calling w/t-mobile, AND SIM-swapping is kosher, and w/out a phone call to change it. If I void a warranty, I just put the SIM in a working phone until I fix the issue with a decent sub-$100 phone, or a prior one. I don't think I will ever go to a provider w/out SIM cards, if I can avoid it. $120@T-Mobile=4 unlimited phone plans w/out VZW.

Factory reset after a backup as well as clearing the Cache partition made my phone so much faster after the lollipop update. Before my battery was dying in a few hours and extremely slow.
