    Cutting the Cord

Cable company has went belly up, so the choices are Time Warner or Satellite. Our cable company already dropped phone and internet last year, and a company called Giggle Fiber took that over. Internet has sped up considerably, and they are actively updating the infrastructure (they start offering 1 gigabit next month in some areas). They sent a letter advising that the cable company was calling it quits, and listed 4 options. 1. Dish Network 2. Direct TV 3. Cutting the Cord 4. Time Warner. I HATE Time Warner, so not my first pick

The internet company recommends satellite or cutting the cord, and basically vilifies Time Warner (and rightfully). They aren't offering any bundle with the satellite companies, but are promoting them for those that don't want to cut the cord (makes sense, Time Warner would take their internet business away). For those wanting to cut the cord, they are offering a free HD Antenna and free installation, and they sell Chromecast/AmazonFire/Roku and maybe a few other options . (they are also using that as an opportunity to upsell higher speed offerings, but that isn't required... I think they are recommending 100 mbps, but I figure 50 mbps was more than sufficient, and we might be able to do just 20 mbps. If it were just me, certainly.)

Are there DVR options that do not require a subscription, like TiVo annoyingly does? If so, what is the most affordable option? And is there any site I can check individual shows availability through?

I already discovered SlingTV, which covers a lot of bases. And we already have Amazon Prime. I figure Netflix, and then the HD Antenna, and maybe a few other subscriptions and it may be covered for cheaper than what we will pay with satellite and even cheaper than what we have been paying. I want to figure out if we can actually get everything we want and how much the upfront will be.

I cut the cable two years ago or so. We put an antenna on the roof to pull down local channels and put a Roku on the TV's in the bedroom and garage, and an apple TV and computer running TVMC (the new version of XBMC Hub).

I don't miss cable or the bill one bit. We have 25mb down and with both TV's running and my wife working from home we haven't had any problems.

My contract is up next month with my satellite provider, however society has my lady watching occasional sport game, my daughter watching Nickelodeon, however my son could care less about anything but video games.

They all seem to charge about $25/month just to have a DVR that works, and that is B.S.
~$600 for the life of a 2-year contract is substantial just to make sure I don't miss The Walking Dead...?

I have a had a Roku, we have 4 Chromecasts, a HDMI Android TV dongle (pre-Chromecast release), and now have a Smart TV, and all work very well on a FiOS pipe.

I just wish there was a better Internet TV option, as I don't watch sports, and the "Discovery" channels are some of my most-watched channels.

We have been subscribing to Dish Network for well over a decade. Their service is good. In fact when we had the roof replaced last year they installed a under-eves mount for the dish. Unfortunately, one of the roofers leaned against the dish and knocked it out of line and we lost the signal. A call to Dish had a service tech out the same day, we didn't even miss the evening Giants game. Because we watch baseball on the Comcast feed, and many Discovery, History, NetGeo Wild and HBO programs, along with VOD movies, we have no plan to "cut the cord". There are three DVR receivers feeding three smart TV's, we record shows with commercials and fast forward through them. With the new "Net Neutrality" regulations, we fear that all streaming Internet services will be heavily taxed reducing the savings. Besides, having one source of our programing in HD is worth the cost. The signal quality of over-the-air reception in this area, even with a 100' tower, rotating antenna and signal amplification, is sub-standard. I removed all that when the satellite receiver was installed. Seems there is no free lunch.

          I just came across ustvnow.com...

"ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC, PBS" free, but it might be like a fly-by-night torrent page?
          Buffers pretty quick.

AMC is included in subscription plans. I am going to look into this, as there are no equipment fees, and DVR option is available (they host?).

Att has a great deal for $50 internet, basic tv, hbo, and a year of amazon prime! They will basically give you tv free so that they have "more subscribers". The internet only actually costs more. It is crazy.

On ebay you can buy hacked Amazon Fire TV Sticks for around $60 to $70 bucks.

this way you can have Amazon Service and Kodi

Here's a good article in today's WSJ about "cutting the cord". Some really good info on available services.
