Opening up a Shooting Range

I think the real expense here would be the land though...with the market what it is you might be on to something.

My real problem with ranges around here is that you can't holster draw and I don't know of any that have tactical lanes that allow movement and such. Probably some laws against it knowing PRK.

On Target in Laguna Niguel allows it if you've participated in four of the pistol matches they hold and are a member of the range.

I imagine that ranges don't let people draw and move while shooting because how do you decide who can and who can't. I'm sure that 70% - 90% of the people at indoor ranges have never done anything like that before and shouldn't be allowed to unless under close supervision (which isn't typically present at indoor ranges).

A shooting range opened up in Burbank about 5 years ago for security guards and ccw holders. It didn't cost millions either. It's a 9 bay range.

There's a thread like this every few months, from what I can remember the dollar amout is HUGE! Number one thing that kills it is the insurance. Your better off using public land (BLM) or buying your own 10 acres or so in the bonnies.

Maybe Kermit is watching this thread: Were you ever able to find out for sure from the Mugu PD if active/retired members could use the on-base range?

I'm telling you, if they got a couple of the Range Officers to volunteer a couple of weekends a month, and even charge a nominal fee, they could make some decent money for the MWR fund. Heck, have the CPO Selectees do it too when it's during their time, or any other kind of fundraiser for that matter.

I know I for one would support them!

To use the Mugu range, you have to join the Mugu Gun Club. active/retired are eligible to join, active is free ( and retired might have been to, but I dont remember). Here is the kicker though: as far as it was before I left, they were only open tuesdays and saturdays for trap/skeet. The smallbore range next door was only for Security to qualify on.

I agree with the MWR aspect of it, and I volunteered to (pay and) take the NRA Range Officer course, but got shut down. They just dont want to deal with it. Truthfully, since they have consolidated both bases, I get the feeling NRSW wants to shut down Mugu and send the planes to San Diego to replace the S-3's and divert all the money for NBVC to Hueneme.

At 2nd Amend. in Bakersfield you can do holster work if you've proved you can do it safely. I do miss being able to practice holster presentation with live ammo.
