How to electronically communicate with shooter during teaching?

Just started teaching my son how to shoot, but with earmuffs on, plus other loud rifles going off near by, it's kinda tuff.

Unless I go with the very expensive method of using something like 3M Peltor communication earmuffs at $500+ a piece, I thought about using standard low cost earmuffs and low cost 2 way radio with mic and ear phones. Any suggestions?

Just use electronic ear muffs. And don't stand next to that guy shooting his S&W 500, it'll be alright.

Howard Leight ones are $52.67 a piece on Amazon.com.

I don't see why you'd need to spend $500 on earmuffs with a comm system. Electronics start at around $50, the howard leights are ok. If you're both wearing those, then you just have a conversation. It's not like you're trying to communicate from a football field's distance away. Even the higher end electronic earmuffs like the MSA sordin's still just rely on a mic, and amplifier built into the earmuffs themselves.

Another inexpensive alternative. Low price and work well enough for me. Around $25.

We've used the Howard Leight Impact Sport electronic muffs for years, never had a problem with them. They are great for class, specifically, you can double up on ear protection (plugs and muffs) because they amplify sound so you can hear voice quite well through the plugs. Especially beneficial if you are shooting indoors or end up next to a bench where someone is shooting a compensated rifle.

The only difference is that if someone fires while you are in the middle of a sentence, the word where the *BANG* happened will be blanked. And, if you have walkie talkies that have a earphone jack, the Impact Sport muffs do have an input jack for that. You'll need the walkies and the adapter jack separately... try Radio Shack or Fry's for that, othewise, online *search mojo*.

Just get some decent electronic muffs BUT have him put his on backwards .. mic in the rear. Then he can hear you clearly.

Use sign language. I use my fingers as numbers for the clock to spot my friend. 11 is upside down index finger, and 12 is upside down peace sign, and thumbs up is bulls eye or spot on. Whatever method works, or you can just shout out numbers, that's what I usually do..

I have "Winchester" electronic ear muffs for everyone in my family. Got them at Walmart for $20 ea. They work great too, I can usually hear people around 30 yards away or further. The problem is they no longer have them at Walmart and they are hard to find online. They are out of stock on Amazon too...

I think using my own made up wacky new sign language should do the job. The only earmuffs I found so far that should fit an 8 yr old kid is from Walkers. No electronics earmuffs is small enough.

I know what the OP is talking about. If there is a lot of shooting going on around you, your electronic muffs are constantly turning on and off and they are no longer any better than passive muffs when trying to talk to a shooter you are helping.

We have to keep in mind that children have very sensitive ears. First time I took my kids we had to leave the range and pick up an ear plug at a nearby gun store. Muffs were not enough. I have to double it up with an ear plug and electronic muffs. Electronic ear muffs should be sufficient enough to hear your commands even with the ear plugs in. I bought the one with the option to slightly open the plugs.

First time experience is very important. We want them to be comfortable.

Learn sign language. If you go deaf it will be handy to know.
