did a little indoor target shooting today and got into a discussion with the guy shooting next to my bay...i happened to be using my Browning Hi-Power and the guy was pretty impressed with the blued finish on it
it's all original, from the day i bought it NIB over 30 years ago, and he was interested in what i used on it...pretty simple, i keep it clean, and, from time to time i'll take a soft cloth with a little Balistol on it and wipe it down then clean it off...at one time the back end of the metal grip had a few rust spots on it, and, it seems that the Balistol applications even removed them, so i liked that
suddenly he's telling me that i shouldn't use Balistol, that it'll ruin the finish on my guns, especially blued finishes...he said the chemical mixture in Balistol is too strong for the finish on firearms...he said there were even some warnings on the internet about it...i didn't find anything on my search
now, i've been using Balistol to wipe down my guns for at least 4 years now, i use it on all of them...the blued finish, the matte, even wipe down my M&P Sport AR15 with it...seems fine
so what's the deal, i think he's full of FUD...he acted quite surprised when i told him i use it, like i was committing a major firearm no no by using the stuff for anything other than cleaning...im pretty happy with the results im getting with the Balistol, but, he got me wondering if there is some long term issue i might be getting myself into with its continued use
from everything i can tell, according to the directions, it seems like there isn't any issue at all with using it to wipe off the firearms, regardless of the finish...i'll keep doing it unless i hear different with something to back it up
now, i know Balistol recently changed its mixture, could that be a problem now...i haven't read anything about not using it in this manner
