So toby-what part on the OP's question do you understand? I don't see where you have answered the OP's question.

He wants an accurate hunting rifle that doesn't weigh a ton and something for a newbie shooter or hunter, problem is we need to know what he wants to hunt and how much he wants to spend, before that is clear nobody can give a decent answer. It's like that. Or we can turn into a long range shooting discussion and what everyone thinks is the best, that's probably where it will end up anyway.

I think .223 in any platform would be fine for hunting beginners. The better question would be "where can I get a tag"?

For a beginner buy a Savage package in the .270 caliber. Great gun, affordable. If you are handgun hunting get a 9mm not the .45. .45's are way over rated and mostly good for boat anchor!

If shotgun the Maverick 88 by Mossberg. Basically a plastic stock model 500 in the $200 and up price range at big 5 and lots of other stores.

Check out remington 783 in .270. I've seen them under $300 and they seem to be a nice budget rifle from what I've read. You can find a decent scope for $150-$200 if you shop around. A good hunting rifle/scope combo around $500 is a good price.

As for caliber recommendation: anything between .270 - .308 should do the trick no matter how much weight Hunters put on over the holidays!
