Just ask, it's that simple! Call his wife if you can & drop some goodie on her about the last time he hunted for example. Make it small talk & ask her a question without disclosing the gift. What could go wrong? She gets upset, you have a JW revolver. Good luck.
Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!

First off, that thing is stunning.
Second, do it (legally). He's a huge John Wayne fan, and its HIS gift. Chances are his wife will not mind a collectors firearm in the house, especially after she sees his excitement in receiving it.
And don't forget, they have the option to lock it up and not keep any ammo for the gun in the house.

Do remember you cannot just give it to him.

Had he been biological parent, or adoptive parent, then give + OPLAW form would work.

Absent that, the transfer is like one between any 2 unrelated CA residents - needs a PPT, using a CA FFL.

Oh, slightly off topic, did you ask him for his "daughter's" hand in marriage?

we never had the problems in CA till the whiteys took over. We used to hunt, fish, roam, then they showed up and wanted to be civilized.............Ruined it for everyone!

That's a beautiful piece, don't be surprised if it brings a tear. I'm sure he'll be humbled and honored to receive it! Nice job.

My first thought was the same as Moemoe's....if there's no ammo, it's just a piece of art. If he has ammo around, then there must not be a problem with the wife. It's a gift to HIM, why do you feel you have to clear it with the wife? That's John's problem, lol.

Great story and great gun, give to the man he'll love it and his wife will most likely be overcome with emotions over the thoughtfulness of it.
Im a warmonger baby, I got blood in my eyes and I'm looking at you.

I would show him the gun, tell him it is a present from you to him, but if it is going to cause any problems with his wife, you would be glad to keep it. I am certain, he will accept your gift and run any interference with the wife.
