    Big 5 guns?

So my wife works at big 5 and I was considering picking up one of their semi auto 12 gauges on Friday. Take advantage of their sale plus 10%. But I'm worried about getting a gun that sucks. Only experience I have with their guns is her dad purchased a double barrel carrage gun and it didn't blow up. Now I don't have too much disposable income so I'm curious if this would be a good first (at least fully functioning) gun or if I should just wait?

Get a mossberg 500 combo and be done with it. Great gun for the money and duel purpose. (Best bang for the buck). For semi auto shotguns get a remington 1100 or benelli. Buy once cry once.

Find out what brand (and model) whatever Semi-auto or any gun is and do your homework. Look up reviews for it online extensively and shop accordingly.

My Brother bought a Mossberg JM Pro 24" from them. Has eaten anything from Wally World birdshot value packs to hi-base slugs & buckshot with no issues.

Turners has an ATI semi-auto BF special for $250.
If you can get a semi cheaper at big 5....go for it.

                  Totaly agree!
For the money - You can't beat the Mossberg 500.
I have 2 of them, (a 12ga and a 20ga) had both of them for years.
I've ran a bunch of rounds through both; all types (bird, buckshot, slug)
                  and never had a issue!

The OP specifically stated he wanted a SEMI-AUTO so why all the Mossy 500 suggestions?

The Escort semi is a very good gun and highly thought of in the UK where it is popular due to the exchange rate. I have two of them (12g tactical/20g youth) and have been very pleased with both. I also have the ATI combo (18.5"/28" barrels) and after exchanging the first due to a bolt issue, it's replacement has been flawless.

I don't have a problem with pump actions I just would realy prefer the semi auto. I'm not sure on brand but I think its a mossburg. It's been awile since I've been in there. My wife is probly going to send me a few pictures when she is at work so I can do a little reaserch. If not ther is a pump that she likes over there.

Get the brand and model of the shotgun you're planning to buy, as someone mentioned, Big 5 does not manufacture those shotguns, they just sell them. So you should do research on the shotgun itself.

If youre getting a shotgun, get a pump action. Semi autos cost a lot more and are still limited to the tube mag's capacity. With some training you can get really quick with a pump action

And I will always be faster than you and anyone else that is busy pumping a shotgun with my 10 rd Mossy JM Pro semi-auto.
Even the Mossy SPX 930 holds 7+1
With practice you can feed shells into any shotgun efficiently.

OP....Semi-autos are the way to go. The only downside is using the cheapest of the cheap low-powered ammo. Some guns may not function fully.
But using medium or high loads, as well as buckshot or slugs, and the gun will operate very reliably.
