    Firearms safety test?

We just moved to Long Beach. Where is the best place to take the required gun safety test? Thanks.

Unless you plan to buy a handgun in the next 6 weeks - and if you want to, you would need the cert this year - you might wait until the first of 2015 and get the Firearms Safety Certificate that replaces the Handgun Safety Certificate next year.

Otherwise, any FFL should be able to handle the test and certificate; not being from LB, can't offer advice on nice places.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Testing for the FSC does not start until 1/1/15. You could still get a HSC but its pretty much a waste of time at this point, unless you need to buy a handgun before 1/1/15.

You take the test at the gun shop. You only need to do this if you're making a purchase of a handgun, starting next year you'll need the new card for all purchases.

So the safety certificate is ONLY required if you are buying a gun and NOT just possessing a gun brought in from out of state in a move to california? I know I need to register all guns. I am moving from Indiana and we have no such requirements.

            Correct.

Pursuant to Penal Code sections 17000 and 27560, any person who moves into California with a firearm is considered a "Personal Firearm Importer" and is required by California law to do one of the following within 60 days: Complete and submit a New Resident Report of Firearm Ownership (BOF 4010A), pdf along with $19.00 to the California Department of Justice, Bureau of Firearms; Sell or transfer the firearm to a California licensed firearms dealer or to another individual using a California licensed firearms dealer to conduct the transaction; or Sell or transfer the firearm to a California

Also, no threaded barrels on handguns and no magazines over 10 rounds. You should also check the assault weapons flow chart.

On the magazines...possession is not illegal. So, correct me if I'm wrong, but if OP already moved here with mags over 10 rounds (which for the record has been stated nowhere) any potential "crime" has already occurred and getting rid of the mags wouldn't accomplish anything. Right?

Also, OP, the statements here are correct about the safety certificate. However, do keep in mind that our semi-auto pistol selection is dwindling rapidly in this state. You didn't say you're looking to buy a pistol, but if you have any plans, better to do so now while SSE is in effect (which ends 1/1/15).

I will be getting rid of mags over 10 rounds so no worries. Thanks for the info on the gun safety test.

You can also get them blocked so that they only can take 10 rounds, and then you don't need to get rid of them.

                      Slippery slope there...
Remember there is statutes of limitation and while possession is not a crime he could still be charged if still in the time limit (yes, that would probably happen by self incrimination).

There is the nuisance law to consider anyways....

Back to OP, the certificate is also technically needed for receiving the loan of a firearm when not in the presence of the owner. Just an oddball CA FYI thing..

                        Fixed that for ya.

It is illegal to import magazines that hold more than 10 rounds into California.

You got rid of the >10 round magazines BEFORE you entered the state of California DIDN'T YOU?

Either that or you blocked them so they cannot hold more than 10 rounds BEFORE you entered the state of California DIDN'T YOU?

If you haven't seen it with your own eyes,
or heard it with your own ears,
don't make it up with your small mind,
or spread it with your big mouth.

Magazines are still out of state. I have not moved there yet so no worries.
