Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

Or why are. You trying to convince him to go to church? Seems like you're bribing him into it. Kind of like those friends that hit you up for lunch, only to try to sell you cutco knives or ACN crap. Just hit him up and hang out at a restaurant or sports bar. Get to know each other again without putting yourself in a bad situation. From first hand experience of having friends like him, you can't trust junkies or former junkies right off the bat. It's like you have to get to know them again. Sad but true

It doesn't matter whether you think the laws are just or not.

If the OP lets his friend hold a gun or ammunition, unless his friend has had all his rights restored, the OP (and his friend) can go to federal prison for five years (and lose gun rights on top of that).

I applaud your efforts in trying to help someone....... but do you know if he even *wants* help?

You know the old, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink kind of a deal.

Anyhoo - assuming he wants your help (some people are turned off by religious sales pitches) - what does *HE* like to do? (then or now) - are there any commonalities that you like as well?

If HE wants help, I'd start with something that he would show interest in, not something that YOU have interest in..... by my way of thinking that would increase your chances of success.

                Just my two cents.

If the friend is on parole, he'd be prohibited from having ANYTHING that could be used as a weapon, let alone a blade or a bow.
