I had a "friend" who was contacted by the DOJ who thought he had still owned a rifle. He had been convicted of a violence related misdomeanor. Fortunately, he produced a receipt showing that the gun had actually been sold to a licensed FFL.

Anyway, in talking with the DOJ, they acknowledged that the matter had been expunged and told him (orally on the phone) that he would be eligible to buy a new gun in January.

So, he went to buy a new gun in January. And it turns out that neither he, nor the DOJ could count to ten, as the ten year period had not run yet. He bought a nice shiny new pistol, waited the ten days, picked up the gun, and then later received a panicked phone call from the FFL-dealer saying they just received a denial letter in the mail, and that he needed to immediately return the gun.

So, yes, be careful.
