Am I able to buy a firearm in california with the intention to trade it? The person receiving the rifle is out of state and legally able to own it. He just has one that I want and is willing to trade.

You can buy a rifle here with the intention of adding it to your collection. If at some time you change your mind and decide to trade it for a firearm your friend has that's legal.You, you, and you: Panic. The rest of you, come with me.

Technically, "No."
The original spirit of the "straw purchase" law was to prevent someone from purchasing a gun and giving it to a prohibited person. This is now enforced as purchasing a gun for anyone else.
However, if you buy a firearm for yourself and later determine it's not what you wanted, you are free to sell/trade/give to another eligible person as long as all applicable laws are followed for the transfer.Comment

To add to my question, does the 10 day waiting period still apply if I bought a rifle earlier this year? I read somewhere that it didn't but can't find solid proof.Comment

10 day wait applies every time a firearm is transferred through a CA FFL dealer.
If you trade a firearm to a resident of another State, then...
... The firearm you are trading needs to get shipped to a FFL dealer in that other State. That FFL dealer then transfers the firearm to the person you are trading with.
... The firearm that is being traded to you needs to be shipped to a CA FFL dealer. That CA FFL dealer then transfers (4473/DROS/10 day wait) the firearm to you.sigpic
