    Pregnant shooters

Anybody ever seen a pregnant lady at a range? Ive heard that after a certain point, it can damage the babies hearing and of course, the gunpowder is probably not good for the mother or the baby, but theres plenty of ladies out there that drink, smoke, do hard drugs...etc while pregnant too lol.

Is this going to turn into a nanny thread......

I don't think its a good idea to shoot while pregnant, but if someone else wants to do so, it's not really my problem. That said, I don't think I've ever seen a preggo at the range.. at least not late enough for me to notice.

My wife got her first two dove when she was 4 months pregnant with no ill effects last year. We asked the doctor and he said just make sure to clean the lead off her hands before eating.

                The topic pops up occasionally.

It isn't clear (a) how much sound gets into the uterus or (b) exactly what effect on unborn kids that sound has, but informed speculation is (a) a lot and (b) it isn't good.

The topic of shooting while pregant -- specifically whether doing so could have adverse effects on the fetus -- has come up numerous time on this board, and has more than once sparked heated debate, but rarely has it garnered more than mere specualtion or heresay from someone's OBGYN. Outdoor range could be ok, but indoor would be questionable both for sound and lead particulate.

The only issue would be the first trimester up to 21 weeks. A fetus' neuro system rapidly develops at this time and exposure to "continuous" high noise "may" affect that development.

Lead exposure is more of a concern since leading is teratogenic (toxic) to a fetus and can affect everything from blood cell creation to kidney development (which also, in turn, affects hearing development).

The fate of the wounded rest in the hands of the ones who apply the first dressing.

Dr told my wife not to be around shooting while prego because of the loud noise.

I was told due to the baby being in amniotic fluid very loud boom with the sound wave directed towards the belly of a pregnant woman might not be good for the baby. It also depends what stage the pregnancy is. I'm thinking high power rifles with muzzle brakes or compensators that deflects blast and sound towards the sides may not be good. The person that told me this is in the medical field so take it for what it's worth.

It's been proven that shooting ranges have a higher level of lead particles unless you're in a battery recycling plant. Ranges with metal targets and holders will have more lead dust on the floor or ground.

Gun ranges here won't let pregnant women shoot. The cite lead as the reasoning. My wife recently popped out a kid and while she was pregnant she wanted to shoot. She asked the doc and the doc says she didn't recommend it but she's not saying no and that there hasn't been any significant studies done to definitively say it's bad or not. Moot point for us as the ranges say no anyway.
