I grew up in Oregon, and lived most of my life in Oregon and Washington. I am use to when you want to go shooting you just drive a mile or two up a gravel road on public or logging land, put up some targets, and shoot. Apparently it isn't so easy in California. Paying to shoot at a shooting range seems about as strange to me as paying to use a public toilet. Is there any public land in California that allows target shooting? I live in on the boundary of San Luis Obispo/Santa Barbara Counties.

I dont live in SLO but go east my friend. East is where all the farmland/middle of nowhere crap is. Like Kern county should have a couple of places.Wise men seldom speak. - ArcusComment

There really isn't much here anymore. It's mostly been closed for target shooting due to fire danger. Unless you know someone with private land your best bet is the San luis obispo sportsman's association (slosa) in between slo and morro bay. It's only $10 to shoot all day and they have a pretty nice set up for rifle and pistol. That's where I go most of the time since my favorite place out in hi mountain now has signs posted saying you can't shoot anymore."Suck on my machine gun" (Ted Nugent)

Move back to Oregon or any free statesigpicOriginally posted by gun toting monkeyboyYou did ask. They were only following your instructions. Next time be a bit more careful in how you phrase your posts. If you give people a straight line like that, this is about the level of response you are bound to get. Just be glad you didn't post "Date this rifle"... Those pictures are usually very disturbing.

All national forest land is good to shoot on and most BLM land is ok to shoot at, both with the normal restrictions (no shooting within 150 yards of a structure, within 100 yards of a road, etc.)
I'm not sure what's open down by SLO, but the closest to me up here in the bay is panoche or griswald, both 2-1/2+ hours away.Comment

So you moved here,
many here want to move their, or other free states.
Southern Ca is not real friendly to gun owners, but someone will chime in for you, and throw you a bone I'm sure.
Hope you moved for a good job, cause that's the trade off...well that and surf & ski same day.
Good luck in the PRK, you gonna need some of that...Comment

There's lots of places to live in California where you can do the same thing, just not in the more populated areas.I grew up in Oregon, and lived most of my life in Oregon and Washington.
