    What wood finish is this?

I recently bought my first 22lr bolt action and decided to buy a Boyds unfinished wood stock... Never worked on wood in my life. That is what happens when you only own ar15 and "tacticool" stuff.

I want to make my stock look like that. Not sure what finish that is... Can anyone I.D that finish?

Looks like walnut, but a lot of finishes differ depending on manufacturer

I'm no expert but I agree it looks like a walnut colored finish to me, as well.
but different woods react differently to different stains,
so whatever stain you get you want to test it in a hidden location on your new wood stock before you apply it on the entire thing.

            Also think that's 'walnut' stain.

There is a lot of variety from different stain manufacturers, how the stain colors any particular type of wood.... how many coats of stain are applied... etc....

but yeah.. thats walnut.... go to home depot, find a 'walnut oil based stain'... show them your active duty mil id or your VA card and get your discount....

Follow the directions on the can. If the first coat doesnt darken it enough... add more/thicker coats letting it sit longer before wiping off the excess. Staining is easy- just follow the directions and wear nitrile gloves... and have some rags/paper towels handy.

Are you talking the Finish meaning the clear coat and sheen ie Matte, Semi gloss, high gloss? or are you asking about the color? two different aspects are going on with that rifle.

Doesnt look like any kind of clear coat on that one.... looks like raw stain.

If there is some kind of protective clear.... it's obviously a matte.... but I dont see traces of any kind of clear... even matte.. looks like raw stain...

OP... I would suggest a protective clear coat.... wipe on varnish is easy to apply and very durable. Look for stuff sold for wood floors... those wipe on varnishes are very tough and durable.

I would recommend 'birchwood casey tru oil'... I've used it, its easy and durable... but thanks to aqmd... it's banned in cali...

I'd also recommend an automotive clear coat if you had the means to apply it... but that takes equipment and training.....

which leaves wipe on flooring varnish as your easiest most durable protective coating.

So after the stain... and you're happy with the color.... you need a 'matte' wipe on varnish or poly... I think most stuff for flooring that is wipe on is actually 'poly'. (short for poly-ester)

If the 'matte' finish is still too shiny.... dull it down with some fine 0000 steel wool. Go easy on it... you dont want to remove the clear... just dull it down.

After you get stained, use tung or teak oil. If it's too shiny use steel wool on it.

The hardware stores, like Home Depot, will have displays showing the different colors of stain on different types of wood. It would be helpful if you know what type of wood you have. Boyd's description probably tells you the type of wood.

Looks like BLO, I used it on my Garand and it looks just like that. Plus it smells great when I shoot it.
