Hearing Protection in a HD scenario

What is everyone doing for hearing protection in a home defense scenario (if anything)? Obviously time and getting your weapon drawn is the most important factor in this type of situation. . .but for those of you who have multiple lines of defense (dogs, security systems, reinforced doors, large house, etc.) and should have a few extra seconds, do you have muff next to your HD gun, or in the safe?

I am thinking I should have a pair of electronic muffs for myself and my wife in the nightstand drawer next to flashlight, extra mag, etc. If time permits it seems like it would be an excellent tool to use while hunkering down. . .saving our hearing, and even giving us an advantage in our ability to hear the intruders better, and our own whispering.

Any downsides, other than maybe making a phone call to 911 more difficult?

I think about this every time I see a movie or TV show where people are shooting in enclosed room or better yet a car. First thought is, everyone is now deaf or their ears are ringing pretty bad. I know just shooting out at the old outdoor shooting range "Rockpile" with the metal roofs it was deafening even with plugs in or muffs on.

    I sure do miss Rockpile...

If you have a threat where you need to consider using deadly force, the last thing on your mind WILL be hearing pro.

Been in a few firefights and as adrenaline is going you don't really notice, once the adrenaline wears off, let the high pitched whine begin...

Should only last your entire life!

I keep a set of electronic ear pro next to the nightstand gun and flashlight. I know I may not have time to put them on and turn them on. I'm honestly less concerned about hearing damage and more concerned about hearing OTHER threats still in the house should gunfire ensue in my home. I remember the Army days of firing 14.5" M4s inside mostly concrete buildings and after one shot you couldn't hear anything (and in some cases dudes were getting dizzy, I never had that).

Either way I keep the ear pro handy but I know I may not have time to put them on. Priority is defense first, and if I got time to throw them on I will, but if the problem is immediate I'll deal with that first.

Yes, when time is short, it is basically point and shoot. . .but we all heard those 911 calls where the person is on the phone for two or three minutes talking about the person trying to break in, then finally gets inside, then heads upstairs to their bedroom, etc. They tell the operator they are armed, and it ta

So you hear a noise in the middle of the night, sounds like a break in, you wake up the wife, grab your gun and hunker down in your safe spot (behind headboard, in closet, etc.) and dial 911. In this type of scenario I would think that grabbing your ear pro at the same time as you reach for the phone and flashlight would be a win win.

Personally, I'll take some hearing damage vs possibly losing my life.

When senses are high, I don't want to cut down on heading with some ear pro or even the electronic ones. Electronic sound is not the same as audible. Again especially when your senses are at their highest. A couple shots won't make you def either. If you get in a full on 20 min gun fight maybe but many soldiers have decent heading after tons of rounds/bombs to off down range constantly.

Handguns are noisy but bearable indoors. Carbine with a muzzle brake is a different story

Yes. I have a pair on my nightstand. They only take a second to put on and you can skip them if urgency demands.

I have 1 pair of the same ear pro sitting on the safe (they are good ones by the way, way better than the sport version). If someone has broken into the house, I won't be grabbing them. If something like a riot is going on, where I'm in danger but it is more needing vigilance rather than a "when seconds count" thing, I'll be wearing them. YMMV

I have a 2 pairs of howard leight sport electronic hearing pro next to the house guns with spare mags/lights.

If you *have* time to put them on- good.

All the nay sayers.... turn on some electronic ear pro to full volume, it AMPLIFIES sounds too which would be in your benefit........

If you dont have time.... oh well.... but if you do have time, use them. Try to protect your hearing if you can. Tinnitus sucks. I'll take tinnitus over death.... but if I can avoid it, I will.

Id rather be totally deaf and still alive vs the other option.

Seems only "Archer" series recognizes this, it's one of his gripes getting tinnitus, his own fault, and every single
character seems to have ZERO trigger discipline. LOL

Yeah, I agree, have them there and who knows, maybe it's worth it.
Maybe not. Most people seem to laugh about it though or think it will
get you killed wasting time. But whatever, tell you the truth we have pets and I really don't want to hurt them either but the idiocy of banning the tools we need to protect our hearing forces very few options.

Anything else in CA that hurts your hearing is a big deal, freaking leaf blowers for crying out loud. But firearms? Oh go to hell you evil gun owners, go deaf!

If I had a decent pair and time to use them I would probably do it. But the Peltors I have suck. While I can hear sounds with them I can't really tell where they are coming from. For that reason alone I wouldn't use them.
