Ammo storage solutions?

An old gym locker. A four drawer filing cabinet. One of those green sheet metal "gun safes" that go on sale every once and awhile at the big box sporting goods stores---all these can be locked for security. Even an old non working freezer. It depends on what kind of space you got, eh? Trap shooters I know buy shells by the flat and just stack them in the cases they came in.
I think a constant cool temperature helps preserve performance and age does take it's toll on ammo, so consider those points as well.
Unless you're a match shooter or maybe running a Boy Scout Camp, keeping excessive amounts of live ammo in your home is a liability.
Only you can decide what is excessive as opposed to what is prudent during times of uncertainty.

I put mine in ammo cans which go into gun cabinets that are bolted to a wall in a secure room.

It isn't so much that I have a lot of one caliber, it's that I have multiple calibers so there is a lot of diversity. Sure, I want to make sure I have enough of what I want to shoot on hand but I'm pretty sure I don't have more than 1000 rounds of any given caliber. That said, 1000 rounds per caliber x 7-8 different calibers makes a lot of boxes and weight haha.

That is correct, trap and other clay target shooters tend to go through a lot of ammo. Wife and I shoot rap and we average around 300 shot shells a week so we order them by the case (250 rounds).

The boxes that hold 25 rounds of 12 gauge shot shells are pretty useful if you have .223rem/5.56mm ammo. I reuse them by loading my .223/5.56 ammo into stripper clips, then store the loaded stripper clips into the shot shell boxes. Each of those box can hold 13 loaded stripper clips (130 rounds). And you can pack 10 of those boxes into a case, allowing you to stack them somewhere easily.

If you go to any clay shooting range, you'll find a lot of these boxes laying around, you can pick up some good ones and use them for storage if you wish.

That's basically what I use. Only problem is if a thief mistakes it for a box of tools and tries to steal it anyway. Just put it in a room where it's a pain to drag out (not the garage).

I have the ammo cans stacked on the top shelf in the closet.
And a few at the foot of the bed my wife keeps kicking in the middle of the night

50 cal ammo cans work great. Water tight, stackable, carry handle, cheap, and with a bolt drilled in them lockable to prevent casual pilfering.

Bad news is they can be stolen easily should you have a burglary.

Chain them all together.

For a cheaper solution, I just picked up 4, 40mm ammo cans yesterday for $50. They stack very well, alot better than the 50 or 30 cal cans, and could hold about 7-8000 rounds of pistol/rifle ammo.

The nice thing about the worksite box is that you can bolt that thing down to the floor. Its better than a gun locker. I suppose you could bolt the ammo cans to the floor as well, but generally I don't worry about ammo as much as guns.
