Tips for trip to San Antonio?

Hi all. I'll be traveling to San Antonio next month for a conference. It'll be right by the riverwalk. Most days will be filled with conference activities but I might be able to steal away for a bit for some must visit shops, food, etc. I won't have a vehicle but anything in cab distance would be great. The hotel is a few minutes walk from the Alamo so that's on the must see list. Priorities are barbecue and gun shops, then everything else. Thanks for any input!

Don't stay at the Seven Oaks.

Anyone who has aver spent time at Ft. Sam Houston will not hesitate to agree with me.

Cold beer, Hot Women, Local Gun Shop, more beer, food, Alamo, life jacket if you get too close to the river with more beer, return to gun shop to grind the owner down on some kind of deal, more food more women. Did someone mention a conference? What is a conference?

Man's got to have some priorities.

Thanks all for the replies. Hambam105, got a name of any local gun shops?

The river walk is legit. You could probably stay entertained just checking out everything there. Alamo is cool. Really small. Bass pro shops is in San Antonio and much different than the ones in Cali. Lots more gun and hunting stuff. Check out some texas BBQ.

Make a deal here at local ffl in case you find a firearm deal and have it shipped back. No cash and carry for Kommiefornians.

Don't fall into the River... Trust me they don't think it's funny.

                      I have two tips:

Boudro's on the Riverwalk has an awesome Blackened Prime Rib:

                      Streetwalkers are near the Fairgrounds...

Oct might be a lot better but when I went it was really humid. Like; really really really. So dress accordingly. Maybe get some no fog if you wear glasses. I had trouble seeing through mine.

Great Tex-Mex in San Antonio - personally, I liked that better than the Texas BBQ (but the BBQ is very good too!) The combination of a college town (translation: hot young women in every bar), excellent food and great music make San Antonio my favorite Texas city. I don't really have specific suggestions - we just wandered around with some locals and ate and drank until being poured into a taxi...

                            I was there last year for the Skeet World Championships, as far as restaurants;

Also, EXPECT humidity. While it is not overbearing like in some parts of the South you feel it. Also, October is a transition month so it can be hot, cool, and/or raining. Be prerared for all 3.

Over-hyped semi-tourist-oriented, but great breakfast and baked goods.

If you're on the river walk, La Margarita next to Mi Tierra has better food, imo.

BEST Tex-Mex in San Antonio is at La Fogata (add .com for their website) on Vance Jackson...a place where locals go for great food and to get away from la touristas'...it's a bit across town, but definitely worth the drive.

Best analogue to the bay area I could give you is getting your Chinese food in Chinatown, v. going to where the locals eat on Clement in the 20's.

Finally, if you visit the Alamo, STFU inside. The place is a memorial to a great part in Texas history and it's sacred to Texans. If you can't keep quiet, you might be asked to leave rather abruptly by a Texas ranger.
