I won't speak for Toby, but for me, some ported pistols vent enough flaming gas to blind you temporarily.
Also, the porting can alter the direction of forces of recoil on the gun. The design of the grip allows the pistol to "roll" upward from the muzzle, dissipating some of the recoil energy through the arc of the wrist/arm/shoulder. Porting can stop or limit the upward roll and shove the remaining recoil straight back into your wrist.
