I need GOOD electronic ears, low profile.

I thought I could get away with using low profile Howard Leight Impact sports in combination with a decent set of in-ear plugs for use with rifle, and just the Impact sport earpro by itself when shooting handgun.

Unfortunately, the HL earpro contributes roughly nothing to sound reduction (worse than the $3.99 harbor freight junky ones I used for years. I had been hoping they would be at least as good as my peltor shotgunners, which I normally use for pistol/22.)

So those are going back to Amazon.

I'm thinking of going with Caldwell E-Max, or Peltor Tacticals. Any thought on those in comparison to the HL?

My HL impact sports are great, Ive shot from .22 up to a .50 BMG with them on and dont need foam plugs.

Dumb question, but are you sure you have them adjusted perfect? Or do you wear eye protection with exceptionally thick arms?

Being that they are lowpros they dont have a huge foam cave for your ear, that was something i had to adjust to after switching from a 10+ year old pair of HL Thunder 29's

If price is no concern I've heard great things about msa sordin supreme pro x's with the gel inserts.

But that's $300. Serious cash for ears.

My eyepro are basically wire, very small. But I tried with and without. It seems like it's open at the bottom rear corner of my ear.

I had my wife try it, and she had the same experience, doesn't block sound much for her either.

I've had good luck with my Impact Sports for sound reduction but I guess my ears are too low as they still hit the rifle stock and lift off. So I'm only using them for pistol.

Y'know, I'll agree that Sordin appears to be a high-end bit of equipment, but the NRR for those is pretty low (IMHO) at 18.

The Howard Leight Impact Pro is NRR30, while the lower profile (and lower priced) Sport is NRR22. I have those, and NRR22 is nowhere near good enough for me - I double up with HL NRR33 earplugs (same as the ones thought to be 'rubber bullets' by that fool reporter!).

Have you adjusted them to come down on your head? Had the same problem you are experiencing with these about a year ago, I was not aware they adjusted be it seemed stiff when I tried. Got home inspected pulled harder down while on head and bingo, perfect fit. For $40 bucks I love mine. As someone else said I use mine for indoor phones on and outdoor shooting 5.56 and 7.62x51 phones on, no problems here. Give them another try and let us know.

Yes the headband. Well then maybe they're not for you if you have them adjusted properly. I'm not familiar with other models as these are still working for me. Good luck on your next pair.

I have those Howard leight electronic ears as well. I have the same experience and double up. Outdoors they are ok for handgun and the AR but that's about it.
