    Shooting goats off a mountain

    Interesting video here:

    Fast forward to time 5:55.

These guys are hunting guides for goat hunting in New Zealand and there is this one location where there's a ledge on the side of a mountain. Goats will jump down the ledge and be stuck there without water or food, unable to climb back up and die a slow death of starvation and dehydration. The only way to resolve this is to shoot them off the side the mountain.

It is interesting and sad how the goats are hit, and then fall off the mountain.

I was told by a local hunter on Maui that you never shoot the white colored goats...

when I asked him why he said

"They help you spot the other goats."
tropical islands, in some areas have very dense vegetation. The brown, mixed and darker colors just blend in.

            I know, I know...white privilege strikes again.

you would think after a few generations of this type of selective hunting they would all be white but maybe it does not work that way genetically.

still it is a good tip to remember if you're doing survival hunting or pest control of animals of color.

save the white ones for last because they may help you by giving away the others positions.

That's a great picture Fjold, what caliber is that rifle?

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against hunting in any form. But I find it sad that they can't devise a way to keep the goats off that ledge where they starve to death. How about some dynamite or something to take out the ledge?

That's a friend's (who lives in New Zealand) 7 Mag. That picture was taken to show off. I killed all three of those goats with one shot (162 grain Amax). We were shooting herds of goats so we would wait for two or three to line up to save ammo.

Goat is a bit too gamy for me. I'd love to go mountain goat hunting I've heard it is very strenuous though.

This thread reminded me of a video of some goats that climbed up an almost vertical wall of a concrete dam. Amazing.

I emailed my friend in New Zealand and it turns out that I've shot goats on some of the forestry blocks that are shown in that video but not on the cliff face.

The guy doing the shooting is named Mark and the guide/outfitter's name is Tony (in New Zealand he's known as "Full of Sheet, Tony")
