    When you least expect it....

I don't like that "oh no vaseline" feeling, and I felt it today...

Back in 2006, I was working in Virginia often, and my older daughter's sperm donor decided while I wasn't around he'd terrorize my daughter, grandkids, and wife. Not a good thing. The turd is known to possess an SKS, and he is clearly unbalanced.

A restraining order was obtained, and things have been good since. Haven't seen or heard from the POS for a couple years.

Today, the first day off I've had in some time, I decided to straighten up the garage. I was busy doing manual labor when I saw a strange pick-up prceeding up my 200-foot drive. For those of you that have been to my place, (Bill W.) you know that to get to my house it is no accident. About halfway up the drive, I recognize the driver as the subject of the restraining order.

I have no weapon close, although there are many improvised weapons in the garage. In the few milliseconds that transpire, I decide that 1) I bolt to the nearest firearm, or 2) stand by and see what develops. I chose COA 2.

Said turd exits the vehicle slowly, with hands in plain view. (he knows me) He approaches slowly, and makes no threat. He clearly states he wants no trouble, and I advise him that is a good thing. After a short chat, he decides to leave. End of story.

When it was all said and done, I asked myself how stupid I would have felt if he'd whooped out that SKS and started to blast. It only takes a half-second.

I usually have a gun within close reach. This is a prime example of how things can go down when you least expect it.

Restraining order - and he still shows up. This guy is not put together right. Good luck in dealing with him.

I also thought that if you have a restraining order you'd have to forfeit ownership.

Me thinks you need to be on the look out now for this guy to show up again. I believe he confirmed where you live now. He may not have wanted trouble today but could be in the near future. Take extra precautions.

      Is the RO still valid?

What was the conversation? Why did he come by? Does your daughter live with you?

I had a similar incident when a coyote was attempting to attack one of my dogs. It convinced me to always carry.

RO still valid. Yes the guy is an idiot. We are having a family conference as we speak. I will not get caught vulnerable again. The reason I posted this is to illustrate how things can go down when you least expect it. The wife brought up an interesting variable; recently she bought a new ride and I took her Tahoe, which is known to the bad guy. My vehicle that was known to him is now my son's, and not on the property. She believes this guy saw my vehicle gone, her's there, and God know's what his intent was until he saw me at home.....scary. I'll be packing.

Step 1: Contact the local authorities and inform them of the RO violation. Get it on record.

Step 2: Notify your family that he's shown up again.

Step 3: Stay prepared, especially when working around the property.

Step 4: Next time he shows up, there's no discussion. "You have to leave, and leave right now." If he refuses, tell him directly to get off the property.

If he shows up again, see step 1.

You might also verify that the RO is still valid. Discussion with a friendly LEO might reveal his absence for the last 12-20 months was due to incarceration. If the RO is still valid and he's on parole, they can revoke it pretty fast.

I hope your wife shoots already.
Pepper spray on hand at least.
                Home security review.
                Notify police to CYA.

                  Results of family conference:

Wife does shoot, and well. She is prepared.

Daughter is warned and ready with legal defensive weapons.

Authorities have been notified. Report on file.

I will be on guard. Funny, I protect others, but found myself complacent. My bad.

Don't beat yourself for that, it was a smart move. If he had come for trouble, he probably would not have been driving up your driveway.
My buddy is in the same situation with his wifes son's bio dad...he chooses to keep his enemies close and a shovel in the trunk...just in case.

Seems to me you won. You were there and he went away. And, it sounds like your wife can take care. If you have a "crazy" on your hands then it is a time to stay vigulant. But hey, you won that round. It's a PIA to carry a gun all the time... that's why cops are payed so well (just a joke).
The point is you have a problem and know it... way ahead of having a problem and not knowing,
                      Good luck

With a long drive way like you described, you should have something warning you someone is coming up it so you have time to prepare. Like a garage door buzzer at the end of the driveway.

Since he violated the terms of the RO can't he be picked up by LEO now and jailed? Whats the point of the RO if he can violate it and walk away?
