    My daughter: "This is stupid..."

My 19 yr old daughter went and got her HSC today. She was pissed that she missed two questions. One of which was "How old do you have to be to purchase a handgun?"

She tried to reason it out thinking "my parents can give (transfer) a pistol to me, so it must be 18“. Her comment afterwards was "That's totally stupid."

What's more stupid is she will have her own handgun and won't be able to buy ammo for it for two more years.
The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.

Just have her do what I did. Get a pistol caliber carbine in the same caliber as the pistol you're gifting to her. That way she can buy ammo from her lgs "for the rifle they sold her". Worked good for me when I was under 21 and needed to feed my Glock 23.

You are mistaken. There is no law that says she can't own a handgun. She just can't purchase one until she's 21.

And like the OP said, can't buy handgun ammo either.

My 17 year old daughter owns a Glock 19 I built for her from a Frame. At 14.

She keeps it in her room.

She has a yearly membership at our indoor shooting range. Shes well known at this range except by the new Counter Jockey they just hired. The other day she drove her boyfriend (17) to this range to shoot. She checked in and wanted to buy 100 rounds of 9. The counter boy said no way; she's only 17. She called Dad, who called the range owners Cell. Problem solved in 2 minutes.

When she's 18 I will transfer many firearms to her. Handguns included.

Glad she's into guns, but the difference between owning a gun >21 and purchasing a gun >21 is pretty clear.

Good for you OP, the young are the future of the sport and with that in mind maybe they will have better luck getting the right people elected, Feinstein and Boxer won't live forever. I applaud all of you who have your teenagers entrenched in the sport, HSC and the new FSC are state sanctioned extortion, anything to make another buck off of us.

Sounds like a mistake I'd make. Over thinking it.

I got that one right though. Iirc I only missed one and it was one of the intra familial transfer questions.

I think I answered that it was okay to transfer between grandfather and grandson, but it was wrong. Or maybe brother/sister.

The test was ridiculously easy. I read the study material beforehand but I probably would have scored the same if I hadn't.

I'm scared of the people who fail it.

Grandpa to grandson is fine. Brother to sister is not.

Yep, Cal law requires all handgun transfers go through a CA FFL. Federal law requires that all firearms except "rifles and shotguns" be transferred to those 21 and older.

Way to go OP and congrats to your daughter. Young and female are two demographics that we need more of in the shooting sports to prove the antis wrong on their "old white guy" stereotype.

I hope she can convince her peer group that the gun laws are stupid.

Good job getting her a gun!
