The Condors downfall was, IMO, related to chemical runoff in certain areas. I remember reading about the debates in the late 80's. Their eggshells were weak & reproduction rates suffered drastically, therefore they nearly died off. The libs & their junk science will almost always put a negative spin on anything related to the enviro, or wildlife for that matter. Humans & lead were the culprits according to the libs. One thing I learned trying to keep BLM open for "the people" is the Desert Tortoise biggest enemy are Ravens. Not dune buggies, not guns, or even people. Ravens love to eat baby tortoises, offroaders were blamed as the primary killers of Tortoises for decades. Tortoises grow extremely slow & Ravens have a "birds eye" view scouring the desert...


I'll say it again, people make a GOOD living writing grants, helping close public lands & waters. There is no law saying they must be honest, the courts get plugged up, Millions get spent, so they settle, usually on the libs side.

This has actually been linked to widespread use of DDT up until 1972 and the half-life of DDT in the soil can range from 22 days-30 years. DDT can bio-accumulate in the fat and it is very resistant to metabolism.

the state pet, i mean condors ONLY eat lead from hunters guns, and of course they fly waaaaay out of their home range to the far corners of the state to eat that specific kind of lead.
so course we have to ban it for all hunting.



soon we will ban lead of ALL KINDS state wide ....thanks to gov newsom
all our bullets will be unusable.
and of course the criminals will only use enviomentally safe ammo when commiting crimes and shooting their victims.
but for some reason they will never be charged with violating the lead bullet ban.

The downfall of the Condor is directly related to the water diversion projects that started in the 1930's and all the dams built in their Southern Range, massive influx of human population.

No free flowing water, no large prey and predator animals, no carrion for the Condor. The Condor needs 3-4 lbs of rotten meat a day. You have to have a lot of dead tule elk and deer to provide food for the Condor. You need herd animals and range/water for them to prosper as well as predators to kill them. Predators were a risk to humans and killed off, herds animals had their ranges reduced, water dammed. You need dead whales, seals etc. left rotting on the beach for Condors to eat, instead of towed out to sea and sunk, because humans want to enjoy the beach. No free lunch, ever.

If lead were magically absent from planet earth, the Condor is still going extinct.

Did anyone see the news article over the winter of the small town in the mountains of southern Kern County being overrun by a flock of California Condor's. The birds were causing damage of homes and businesses in the town as they were constantly eating at wires roofing materials and painted wood on buildings. Yea right the problem is lead in an animal on how many gut piles and deer shot per year. Look up the numbers on the Fish and Wildlife website of how many animals are taken in those zones each year. When you factor the small percentage of wounded animals left behind (which is illegal) and or the small number of gut piles sat on by condors (as other scavengers such as the coyote wouldn't be run off by a condor) the numbers don't add up any way you look at them. This is junk science with the ultimate goal to curtail hunting. And I find it amazing the number of hunters and gun owners that are in favor of this law.

As it turns out...
The lead ammo ban WAS only in condor areas. Now I think it is statewide. Turns out people would shoot an animal with a lead bullet and the bullet would fragment into a thousand pieces and the hunters would cut off the parts that they want and leave the parts that had the wound channel in it for the rest of the animals to eat (or they would not get a clean shot and the animal would run off and die somewhere where they couldn't retrieve it). Since condors are basically big ***** vultures, they would eat EVERYTHING left of the carcass that the crows and coyotes didn't eat and they would get lead poisoning. You may not want to believe it, but a lot of research was done and its not "junk science."
If people would have just cleaned up after themselves we would not have this problem.
In the end, the copper bullets expend better than lead and don't fragment.
In some other states, hunters would donate meat from their hunts to homeless shelters and ~85% of the meat had to be thrown away because they would x-ray the meat and there would be a whole bunch of tiny little pieces of lead in the meat.
If you think lead "ain't that bad for you" just look at what happened to the Romans. I think it's nationwide that you have to use steel shot for water foul because they don't want the water to get contaminated with lead.
Just remember....
"We do not give this earth to our children, we borrow it from them."
At least at the shooting ranges they go through a few times a year and "reclaim" the lead and other metals.

I thought it was BS too until I actually looked into it.

Since, in your own words, Condors are basically big vultures. Why didn't all the vultures die?

There's a problem these days. Science has no meaning anymore. Everything is so manipulated. Can we just have the truth please.

Actually "Science" has always been the Bastard Child to be manipulated by the Politically Correct.

At one time it was the Catholics who manipulated "Science" in Spain and had an Inquisition.



Then there were the McCarthy Communist Witch Trials.



The idea is the same, confuse the truth, hide the truth and scapegoat.
