When I moved up to Idaho in 2009 my truck reg was due in a couple of days so I went to their DMV the day I arrived and got license and registration done in about an hour and twenty minutes. That included testing for auto license and testing for a motorcycle endorsement. Idaho wanted documentation showing you were present at the address, I already had some official bank mail going there and your declared intent to become a resident.

It's also amazing that when you have a DMV related question you call a number, someone answers the phone, then answers your question.

I'd recommend contacting the local DMV office where you intend to reside and ask them - good way to get started.

I had a good idea what the answers would be.
However, if I did not ask a question to be 100% sure, that would be stupid on my part.
Regardless of the replies, I want to do the best I can to be sure of my rights, as well as learn from "you folks" what I do not know, and should know.
I am learning; as far as I am concerned, Cal Guns, and the members are the best source of Firearm Info anywhere.
Plus compared to going into a "Gun Shop" where sometimes customers are treated like idiots by the "Guy behind the Counter, this eliminates that stage of learning.

Congratulation on the move to a less-restrictive state.
I will be retiring back home in Northern NM soon.

As to the question, I would give my wife (girlfriend or both ) a revolver.
A 357 S&W Ladysmith, with 38's till she is comfortable with the larger rounds.

If she is going into combat, a 9mm or 45 caliber semi-auto with hundreds of magazines.
