    New Mexico

    Happy 4th of July everyone.
Does anyone out here know how long it takes to establish residence to be able to purchase a Hand Gun?
We will be living in the "Boonies."
    I want a Pistol for my girlfriend/wife.
I have an AR and two Shotguns...
Will I have to "Re-Register" those?
I would prefer to purchase a Pistol there to avoid "Red Tape."
    Any suggestions?

Go to the .gov website of the place your looking to move. A buddy of mine bought land in AZ and was thinking he could start buying guns. Not the case. Most states have very strict requirements to be considered a resident.
Knives don't stab people, cars don't drive drunk, eating utensils don't make you fat and pencils don't mis-spell words.

      Thanks Doc.
My concern is that due to the New Mexico Hand Gun Rules, it might be better to purchase a handgun here-CA before I get there.
The gun is only for self defence-Girlfriend.
I am looking at either a 357 revolver, or Auto.
      Possibly both.
      A Glock &S&W.
      What do you think?
      PS
      Does a Glock 357 also take 38 rounds as a 357 Revolver?

There is a lot of very bad and inaccurate information going around relative to this issue. May I suggest you do a bit of on line research. To get you started, the following is a direct cut and paste from AFT. Note that for a US citizen there is no specific time period to quality as a resident of a state. The only requirement is that they are "present in a State with the intention of making a home in that State”

So to answer your question, the day you move to New Mexico you qualify under federal law to legally purchase a handgun.

State of residence. The State in which an individual resides. An individual resides in a State if he or she is present in a State with the intention of making a home in that State. If an individual is on active duty as a member of the Armed Forces, the individual's State of residence is the State in which his or her permanent duty station is located, as stated in 18 U.S.C. 921(b). The following are examples that illustrate this definition:

Example 1. A maintains a home in State X. A travels to State Y on a hunting, fishing, business, or other type of trip. A does not become a resident of State Y by reason of such trip.

Example 2. A maintains a home in State X and a home in State Y. A resides in State X except for weekends or the summer months of the year and in State Y for the weekends or the summer months of the year. During the time that A actually resides in State X, A is a resident of State X, and during the time that A actually resides in State Y, A is a resident of State Y.final rule would provide that a citizen “present in a State with the intention of making a home in that State” would satisfy section 922(b)(3)’s requirement that he or she “reside in . . . the State” where the FFL is located, but that an alien lawfully “present in a State with the intention of making a home in that State” would not satisfy that statutory requirement until the alien proved as well that he or she had resided in that State for a minimum of 90 days.4 Residency Requirements for Persons Acquiring Firearms, at 21 (proposed rule, not published, intended to be codified at 27 C.F.R. 478).

No way, no how. The Glock shoots 357 SIG.

Plus a 38 SPL or 357 mag round are designed for revolver use, check the rim end of the cartridge.

I would suggest buying two pistols.
One for your wife, one for your girlfriend.
Otherwise they might get jealous and fight over your gun.

When I was going to school in South Dakota within a month I had new vehicle registration and drivers license, two weeks later I walked out of a gun store with a glock 23 in under 20 min. Merica.

You lucky dog, New Mexico is way more free than CA. Just get your move on and enjoy your rights and freedoms.

                    Shaun:
It is rather apparent that you are relatively new to the shooting sports and firearms in general. Let me begin by saying welcome to our sport; assuming you stick with it you will have a lifetime of enjoyment. Now to answer your original question, can one use, the 38 special revolver cartridge in a Sig .357. The simple answer is no. The Sig .357 is a totally different round than the .357 Magnum. The original .357 magnum was developed in 1935 by the folks at S&W at the time they introduced the original .357 magnum revolver. The .357 magnum is nothing more than a .38 special case lengthened approximately 1/10 inch. It is a rimmed case for use in revolvers.

The .357 Sig is a rimless cartridge made by necking down a .40 cal case to 35 caliber. It was developed in an effort to get .357 magnum performance in a semi-automatic pistol. While the .357 Sig does in fact come very close to duplicating the performance of the .357 magnum revolver cartridge they are in fact totally different rounds and not interchangeable.

Youve been here since 09 and you asked that?

Go google 357 sig and look at the brass, then google 357 mag and look at the brass...

NM has like some strange law where you can only carry 1 handgun at a time.

20 minutes? You spent 15 minutes deciding?

Say hi to your beautiful and pro gun, pro freedom , Governor .
                            The lovely Susanna Martinez .
You may want to view a current pic of a Governor Martinez and compliment her on the speech given at GOP convention.
As a side note , the crappy haircut she had is gone . Luckily for Gov. Martinez, she took a stand for marriage defined as 1 man, 1 woman. Which really means she is against bigamy, polygamy, adult incest, same sex marriage and beastiality .

Her tolerant gay haircutter refused to schedule an appointment for her, because she is principled !

I would buy guns and everything else in New Mexico. Spending money in a new state is a good way to get accepted .
